  4. Creating a character She had brown, shoulder length hair, and green eyes. Being a young, single mother had made her strong and determined, but not hard. Her husky, melodious voice was often filled with humour and always expressive. She had moved around a lot, as she raised her daughter and, as well as adding to her strength of character, this had broadened her experiences, making her interesting and fun to be with.

  5. Create your own character Create you own character, by filling out the web yourself. Perhaps you may like to think about someone you know, or combine the traits of people you know to make up your character.

  6. Get the message? • Love? • Friendship? • Identity?

  7. Write a story about love, friendship or being true to yourself

  8. Style: the way the story is told • Use of the second person (‘you’) makes us feel as if the characters are talking to us • Description slows the story down, but gives it colour & life • Use of first person (‘I’) creates a sense of being there in the reader • Dialogue makes the story move more quickly

Write, using the appropriate style • A scene in which two teenagers are fighting • A scene in which a teenager is called into the principal’s office for fighting Choose whether to write the scene in the first, second or third person. Use the kind of language (slang, colloquial, formal) that the characters would use. Use dialogue and description to provide a ‘picture’ for the reader.
