William Shakespeare’s Unit: Passion for Power Macbeth Objective: To appreciate a Shakespearean tragedy; to distinguish qualities that make a tragedy and a tragic hero; to recognize, analyze and understand literary terms and devices; to express understanding though a variety of written pieces. Essential Question: What human weakness might cause the downfall of a great political, business or religious leader?

Notes  Notebook (TEST) • The tragedy of Macbeth is a revenge play; it is a fabrication about an actual historic king. • Macbeth has strong desires to be king from the start of the play; the witches simply reflect his ambition. • Lady Macbeth: She is a “woman” plotting in the play  This suggests this is a world turned upside-down; unnatural. • Macbeth is a villain/hero combined. • Why? He is a tragic hero plotting someone else’s death. • Reason: “Revolting Ambition”
