  2. BACKGROUND • Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1605-1606 • It was first performed in the Hampton Court Palace before James 1 and his guest I 1606 • The main theme of the play was greed and others include: ambition, temptation, the natural/supernatural, guilt • Macbeth’s desire to be king • Lady Macbeth’s hatred of Duncan and her desire to see her husband be crowned king • Witchcraft and witches are used in the play because at the time witchcraft was frowned upon at the time of the plays which Shakespeare wrote Macbeth • The story line was not original because they was an actual Macbeth reigned in Scotland in 1040 to 1057, who killed his predecessor Duncan 1 and was in turn killed by his son Malcolm 3. Malcolm slaughtered Macbeth’s family to have his kingship stabilized. This led to the gradual break down of barriers between England and Scotland and to the introduction of English ways and customs • Shakespeare changed some key aspects of the story to make the story dramatic. Shakespeare’s Macbeth finds himself unable to live with himself and the consequences of his actions after killing the King. He rebelled against God and he is rightly punished by death.

  3. Themes • Power • In Macbeth, regicide (killing a king) is unnatural and evil but tyrannicide (killing a tyrant) is a perfectly acceptable action. • Fate, and Free Will • Human actions are ambiguous, we never completely understand why they do the things they do. People suggest that man’s fate is predetermined, however Shakespeare shows that human ultimately determines how man will reach his destiny. • Ambition • Ambition can be a dangerous matter when it becomes excessive. Shakespeare shows excessive ambition is unnatural and dangerous and destroy people or even nations. • “Fair is foul and Foul is fair” • The witches chant this throughout the play because truth and reality are always questioned. There is not distinction between what is foul and what is fair. Lady Macbeth has hullicinations of the blood stains of Duncan on her hand, showing that no matter what, she cant wash away the guilt of helping kill Duncan. • Gender Roles • Lady Macbeth shows her masculinity with her willingness to murder. Women are portrayed as dangerous forces that can weaken and ruin men. • The Supernatural • The three witches represent fear of the unknown

  4. ”THE VERY FIRSTLINGS OF MY HEART SHOULD BE THE FIRSTLINGS OF MY HAND" • Doesn’t care who he harms and how • For colored girls • Based on Fate and free will • Gender Roles • “ I do you like I do you ‘cause I know you can take it”

  5. Modern Connection • Snow white(Macbeth) and the huntsman(three evil witches) • Theme: gender role • Snow white sacrifices the young girls youth for her beauty and power to be long lived and evil forever • Supernatural and ambition • Limitless( him wanting power and obtaining it in the wrong ways because of greed)

He also responds to every problem with violence and murder • Lady Macbeth- Macbeth’s wife who helped kill Duncan so her husband would be named king and who eventually committed suicide from her guilt of killing and convincing her husband to kill Duncan • Three witches –plot mischief against Macbeth using spells, charms, and prophecies. • Banquo- the brave, noble general who begins to haunt Macbeth about his death • King Duncan- the good king of Scotland who is killed by Macbeth, for his crown. His death symbolized the downfall of order in Scotland and how it can only be restored when Duncan’s son, Malcolm occupies the throne again. • Macduff- nobleman angry about Macbeth’s reign and becomes a leader of crusade to take the power from Macbeth, giving it to the rightful man, Malcolm. • Malcolm- son of Duncan who when comes to power, restores order in Scotland • Hecate- the goddess of witchcraft, who helps the three witches work their mischief on Macbeth • Fleance- Banquo’s son who survived Macbeths attempt to murder him. • Lennox- a Scottish nobleman • Ross- a Scottish nobleman • The Murderers- a group of deceitful people conscripted by Macbeth to murder Banquo, Fleance, and Macbeth’s wife and children • Porter- the druken doorman at Macbeth’s castle • Lady Macduff- Macduff’s wife • Donalbain-Duncan’s son and Malcolm’s younger brother

The struggle between evil, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and justice Malcolm and Macduff, who wanted the best interest for their nation. • It starts with Macbeth and Banquo encounter with the witches creating a big conflict, and soon Lady Macbeth influences Macbeth into seizing the crown from Duncan and reigning king. • At the climax of the story, Macbeth begins his foul crimes, starting with killing a righteous man and king, Duncan, and victims along the way as he killed subjects to avoid consequences of his crimes. • Macbeth then murders Duncan’s servants Banquo, Lady Macduff, and her son.
