  2. The Real MacBeth (1005-1057 CE) The character MacBeth is loosely based off an actual person. Mac Bethad was the King of Scotland from 1040 to 1057 Mac Bethad means “son of life” 11th Century Scotland was a barbaric land with war and ruthless slaughter. The Timeline of MacBeth’s Reign 1040- MacBeth killed King Duncan and became King 1054 – Malcolm (son of Duncan) stakes his claim on the throne and challenges MacBeth 1057 – MacBeth’s army is finally defeated and MacBeth’s son Lulach becomes King 1058 – Malcolm kills Lulach and takes back the throne.

  4. The Scottish Play MacBeth is steeped in superstition. The actors consider it bad luck to even say the name Mac Beth unless they are in rehearsal. Often they call the play “The Bard’s Tale” or “The Scottish Play” (The Play that Shall Not be Named!!)

MacDuff – the person trying to fight MacBeth and claim the throne back. The Three Witches – the witches who create a prophesy for MacBeth Malcolm – Duncan’s son Donalbain – Duncan’s son and Malcolm’s younger brother
