1. New York Colony • Come to New York the land of hot summers and cold winters.

2. Founder • Samuel de Champlain • He found New York in 1608 • 1609 Henry Hudson claimed the area as New Netherlands

3. Reasons For Being Founded • Dutch gave charter to the Dutch East India company • 1664 British made the colony surrender • Changed named to New York

4. People in the colony • White settlers represented Dutch west India company • Patroonship • Indentured servants s • 1 out of 5 African slaves • Native American tribes

5. Patoonships • First white from Dutch West India Company • The Dutch West India Company set up patroonships

6. Patroons • If you paid your own way you will receive 50 acres of land • For every person that you paid for, you got another 50 acres • One fifth of every person in New York was a slave

7. People • Native American tribes in the area around New York were forced to move out an go somewhere else
