  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Therefore, let us draw near to God our Father with a true heart to confess our sins, and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

  22. FIRST READING R: The first Reading for the Third Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter twenty one of 1st Kings beginning at verse one. 1 Kings 21:1-21a CEV Naboth's vineyard

  23. 1 Kings 21:1-21a Naboth owned a vineyard in Jezreel near King Ahab's palace. 2One day, Ahab said, "Naboth, your vineyard is near my palace. Give it to me so I can turn it into a vegetable garden. I'll give you a better vineyard or pay whatever you want for yours.”

  24. 1 Kings 21:1-21a 3Naboth answered, "This vineyard has always been in my family. I won't let you have it." 4So Ahab went home, angry and depressed because of what Naboth had told him. He lay on his bed, just staring at the wall and refusing to eat a thing.

  25. 1 Kings 21:1-21a 5Jezebel his wife came in and asked, "What's wrong? Why won't you eat?“ 6"I asked Naboth to sell me his vineyard or to let me give him a better one," Ahab replied. "And he told me I couldn't have it." 7"Aren't you the king of Israel?" Jezebel asked. "Get out of bed and eat something! Don't worry, I'll get Naboth's vineyard for you.”

  26. 1 Kings 21:1-21a 8-10Jezebel wrote a letter to each of the leaders of the town where Naboth lived. In the letters she said: Call everyone together and tell them to go without eating today. When they come together, give Naboth a seat at the front. Have two liars sit across from him and swear that Naboth has cursed God and the king. Then take Naboth outside and stone him to death!

  27. 1 Kings 21:1-21a She signed Ahab's name to the letters and sealed them with his seal. Then she sent them to the town leaders. 11After receiving her letters, they did exactly what she had asked. 12They told the people that it was a day to go without eating, and when they all came together, they seated Naboth at the front.

  28. 1 Kings 21:1-21a 13The two liars came in and sat across from Naboth. Then they accused him of cursing God and the king, so the people dragged Naboth outside and stoned him to death. 14The leaders of Jezreel sent a message back to Jezebel that said, "Naboth is dead."

  29. 1 Kings 21:1-21a 15As soon as Jezebel got their message, she told Ahab, "Now you can have the vineyard Naboth refused to sell. He's dead." 16Ahab got up and went to take over the vineyard.

  30. 1 Kings 21:1-21a 17The LORD said to Elijah the prophet, 18"King Ahab of Israel is in Naboth's vineyard right now, taking it over. 19Go tell him that I say, 'Ahab, you murdered Naboth and took his property. And so, in the very spot where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, they will lick up your blood.' “

  31. 1 Kings 21:1-21a When Elijah found him,   20Ahab said, "So, my enemy, you found me at last." Elijah answered: Yes, I did! Ahab, you have managed to do everything the LORD hates. 21Now you will be punished. You and every man and boy in your family will die, whether slave or free This is the word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  32. Psalm 5:1-8CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm Five R: 1Listen, LORD, as I pray! Pay attention when I groan. C: 2You are my King and my God. Answer my cry for help because I pray to you.

  33. Psalm 5:1-8CEV R: 3Each morning you listen to my prayer, as I bring my request to you and wait for your reply. C: 4You are not the kind of God who is pleased with evil. Sinners can't stay with you. R: 5No one who boasts can stand in your presence, LORD, and you hate evil people.

  34. Psalm 5:1-8CEV C: 6You destroy every liar, and you despise violence and deceit. R: 7Because of your great mercy, I come to your house, LORD, and I am filled with wonder as I bow down to worship at your holy temple.

  35. Psalm 5:1-8CEV C: 8You do what is right, and I ask you to guide me. Make your teaching clear because of my enemies. Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen.

  36. Second reading R: The second reading for today is written in the second chapter of Galatians beginning at verse 15. Galatians 2:15-21 CEV Jews and Gentiles are saved by faith

  37. Galatians 2:15-21 R: 15We are Jews by birth and are not sinners like Gentiles. 16But we know that God accepts only those who have faith in Jesus Christ. No one can please God by simply obeying the Law. So we put our faith in Christ Jesus, and God accepted us because of our faith.

  38. Galatians 2:15-21 17When we Jews started looking for a way to please God, we discovered that we are sinners too. Does this mean that Christ is the one who makes us sinners? No, it doesn't!

  39. Galatians 2:15-21 18But if I tear down something and then build it again, I prove that I was wrong at first. 19It was the Law itself that killed me and freed me from its power, so that I could live for God. I have been nailed to the cross with Christ. 20I have died, but Christ lives in me. And I now live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me.

  40. Galatians 2:15-21 21I don't turn my back on God's undeserved kindness. If we can be acceptable to God by obeying the Law, it was useless for Christ to die. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  41. C: Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus said: Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her. (Mark 14:9 NRSV) Alleluia.

  42. gospel M: The Holy Gospel for today is written in the seventh and eighth chapter of St Luke beginning at verse 36 C:  Glory to you O Lord. Luke 7:36 - 8:3 CEV A sinful woman forgiven; women followers

  43. Luke 7:36 - 8:3 36A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So Jesus went to the Pharisee's home and got ready to eat.

  44. Luke 7:36 - 8:3 37When a sinful woman in that town found out that Jesus was there, she bought an expensive bottle of perfume. 38Then she came and stood behind Jesus. She cried and started washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. The woman kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them.

  45. Luke 7:36 - 8:3 39The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, "If this man really were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him! He would know that she is a sinner.”

  46. Luke 7:36 - 8:3 40Jesus said to the Pharisee, "Simon, I have something to say to you." "Teacher, what is it?" Simon replied. 41Jesus told him, "Two people were in debt to a moneylender. One of them owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed him fifty.

  47. Luke 7:36 - 8:3 42Since neither of them could pay him back, the moneylender said that they didn't have to pay him anything. Which one of them will like him more?" 43Simon answered, "I suppose it would be the one who had owed more and didn't have to pay it back." "You are right," Jesus said.
