  2. Opening Questions • What is a “Cold War” • What was Yalta and Potsdam? • What were the major agreements of both conferences?

  3. Cold War • Cold War was a conflict between the United States and the USSR in which there are no direct confrontations on the battlefield. • At the heart of the conflict was a battle over communism. • There is a lot of spying on each other, an arms race, and competing for territory.

  4. Fight of Ideas • After the war, we want to spread democracy and capitalism and the USSR wanted to spread communism and have a protective buffer between itself and Europe.

  5. Conflict in Europe • We focus on containment – a policy of keeping communism from spreading. • Tools of Containment • The Truman Doctrine was a plan to give money to countries that were fighting communism. Mostly helped Greece and Turkey. • The Marshall Plan provided aid to any European nations that needed it to rebuild industry. With rebuilt industries, people would be less likely to turn to communism and radical leaders like Hitler.

  6. NATO vs. Warsaw Pact • North Atlantic Treaty Organization was an alliance between the U.S. and the countries of Western Europe. NATO kept troops ready to fight the USSR if they tried to take more of Europe. • The Warsaw Pact was an alliance between the USSR and its satellite nations in Eastern Europe. This was the Soviet Unions answer to NATO
