  5. IMPORTANT POINTS • Teacher Development • Methodology – I want you to discover a more communicative way to teach your classes. I will show you some techniques, but most importantly I hope you develop your own methods. • Language Skills – This is not an English Language class. I will not teach you grammar and vocabulary. I will help you improve your English skills by practicing and challenging you with difficult teaching topics. And, we will also practice how to teach reading, writing, listening, and speaking. • Course Design • 60 hours of class time + 10 hours of portfolio preparation + homework assignments

  6. Ice Breakers Ice Breakers = Activities for the teacher and students to warm-up, relax, and know each other.

  7. Examples of Ice Breakers • Beginning level  Circle name game • Get in a circle and listen to the directions. The teacher can show directions to students by modeling.

  8. Reflection: Circle Name Game • Talk with your partner about these activity. • Did you like it? Why did I do it? What kinds of skills? Etc. • Repeating is a very simple skill. • It trains students NOT to depend on Portuguese translations. • Teacher can get a sense of what students know. • This type of practice has more REAL purpose – Playing a game and getting to know others. • Make a safe environment to practice and talk. • Fluency OVER accuracy.

The teacher can show directions to students by modeling. Give directions step by step.

  10. ICE BREAKERS – Palm Activity • Draw your hand on a piece of paper. Then, write your name on the bottom. . • Leave your paper on your desk. • Everyone - walk around and write 1 question that you want to know about your classmates ON ONE OF THE FINGERS. • Write 6 questions for 6 different classmates. • Do not write the same question that someone already wrote. • Everyone will get their papers and then answer the questions. • Please share (or finish for homework).   11. Reflection: Palm Activity • Talk in your group about this activity. • Did you like it? Why? Why did I do it? What kinds of skills? As students, what did you do in this activity? What are some other benefits of this activity? • Students get to move around. • Includes all students (low- & more advanced-level) • Main point is to REALLY ask questions to each other. • Practice in a good environment.

Closing – Teaching Metaphor • Metaphor – comparison of two different things based on the attributes that they share. • Ex: Books are like airplane ticket around the world. • Reading is like a passport to life. • A teacher is like… • Teaching is like… Write at least 4 explanations or reasons. ex.
