  1. Islam A religion of Ages

  2. What is Islam? • Islam is a religion where the people who practice it believe the purpose of life is to worship god. A person who practices the religion of Islam is called a Muslim. They believe that there is only one god, Allah, which is Arabic for God. Islam began long ago in the Middle East in an area now known as Saudi Arabia.

  3. Basic Beliefs • Islamic people are monotheists, meaning they believe in only one god. In their case, Allah. They don’t believe in any incarnations or relatives either. Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the son of God.

  4. Where is Islam practiced? • Islam is practiced everywhere in the world today as it is the second largest religion behind Christianity, but the country with the largest Muslim population is Indonesia. Buildings that Islam are practiced in are called Mosques, and some mosques are massive. Mosques to Muslims are Cathedrals to Christians, all monuments to god.

  5. How has Islam Impacted Society? • During crusades in the past, Christians and Muslims have gone to war for Jerusalem. After the war they had changed ideas on their own beliefs. Today, people think of Islamic people badly because of terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda bombing places such as the World Trade Center.

Traditions & Symbols The Five Pillars of Islam • Shahadah: Sincerely reciting the Muslim profession of faith • Salat: Performing ritual prayers the right way five times a day • Zakat: Paying a charity tax, also known as Alms, to help the poor and the ones in need • Sawm: Fasting, to not eat any food, during the month of Ramadan • Hajj: Pilgrimage, a long journey, to Mecca • Represents that muslims put their faith in first place

The Ramadan • Is a festival • The gates of heaven is open • The gates of hell is closed, devils are chained up in hell • Ninth month of the Islamic calender • First revealed this month • Muslims believe that the things they did kindly is rewarded because devils had been chained up in hell • Blessed by Allah, Islamic god • Fasting during the whole month

Information about Muhammed • History & the Prophet Muhammad • Muslims believe that Islam is a faith that has always existed and that it was gradually revealed to humanity by a number of prophets, but the final and complete revelation of the faith was made through the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century CE. • According to Muslims, God sent a number of prophets to mankind to teach them how to live according to His law. • Jesus, Moses and Abraham are respected as prophets of God. • They believe that the final Prophet was Muhammad. • Muhammad was born in Mecca in Saudi Arabia in 570. • He was a deeply spiritual man, and often spent time in meditation on Mount Hira. • The traditional story of the Qur'an tells how one night in 610 he was meditating in a cave on the mountain when he was visited by the angel Jibreel who ordered him to recite.

History & the Prophet Muhammad • Once Jibreel mentioned the name of Allah, Muhammad began to recite words that he came to believe were the words of God. • Prophet Muhammad started teaching others about the religion. • Prophet Muhammad had many followers but also many enemies so he moved from Mecca to Medina. • Muslims believe that Islam has always existed, but for practical purposes, date their religion from the time of the migration of Muhammad. • Muslims base their laws on their holy book the Qur'an, and the Sunnah. • Muslims believe the Sunnah is the practical example of Prophet Muhammad and that there are five basic Pillars of Islam. • These pillars are the declaration of faith, praying five times a day, giving money to charity, fasting and a pilgrimage to Mecca (at least once).

What Morals do Islam Teach? • What morals does the religion teach? • Learning the Qur’an (Islam bible) by heart, or engage in other religious study. • Overcoming things such as anger, greed, hatred, pride, or malice. • Giving up smoking. • Cleaning the floor of the mosque. • Taking part in Muslim community activities. • Working for social justice. • Forgiving someone who has hurt them.
