  2. What is community? A place where students feel: • Valued • Respected • cared for • Encouraged • Safe (physically and emotionally) • They matter to everyone There is a sense of unity and pride for all involved in the community.

  3. Why community? The Child Development Project found: • Promotes social, moral and intellectual development • Stronger community feeling = more students report liking school and learning • Positive effects are greatest in students with a low socioeconomic status Overall-if you want kids to do well in school, you have to help them develop an environment that helps them feel good about school and their classmates.

  4. Community misconceptions • Students lose their identity and conform • Building a community is simply about being nice • Students will become compliant • The teacher alone creates community for the students

  5. Community Building Prerequisites • Time • It takes time for the students to get to know one another in a community context • Group Size • The classroom is a good size, too large and you may need sub-communities • Teacher • Needs to be a part of the adult community at the school

Community Building Strategies • Relationships with adults • Important that students see the teacher as a human • Show them that you genuinely care • Be vulnerable • Admit when you are wrong • Remember details about their lives • Authentic responses to their questions • Model positive interactions for them

Community Building Strategies • Connections between students • Use activities to get them connected • Interviews and introductions • Give them the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings • Give them the opportunity to view things from the perspective of others These kinds of activities help them feel more connected to others and to feel more understood in the community.

  8. Community Building Strategies • Classwide and schoolwide activities • Whole group collaboration activities • Class mural, collage, quilt • Class meetings to practice community together • Sub-communities if necessary

Community Building Strategies • Using academic instruction • Relate community to what is going on in the classroom: homework, projects, reports, etc. • Build discussion time into your instruction as an opportunity to practice community • Cooperative learning so students can learn and grow from one another • Tie curriculum back to the classroom community

Final Thoughts On Community • Powerful classroom community can help students make more positive associations about school. • Community helps us move beyond discipline and nurture students more effectively. • You must involve students in building the community-it is not effective if you impose it on them.
