  1. Target Audiences

  2. Detour • Detour is aimed at young people aged 16-24 aimed at both genders. • My target audience likes the genre of horror but we wanted to make it different somehow. As we were making a radio drama it was hard for us to convey the idea ‘how can we make ours different?’ It was also hard to make our drama scary so we gave our target audience what they were looking for. We tried to include elements of horror throughout such as loud, strange noises etc. so we were keeping to the conventions of horror but on the other hand we wanted it to be unique. As we were planning we had to constantly think of how we can satisfy both genders. Throughout my poster and feature planning I made sure everything was aimed at males and females for example a ‘flashy’ car for males. • The only regulation issue we had to deal with is the swearing. At the beginning we included a lot of swearing and when we played it back we decided we might face some problems with this issue. In our final version we included ONE swear word. We decided to air our radio drama at 10pm which is after the watershed which meant we could lose some of our audience but this was a risk we were willing to take.

  3. Under The Mushroom Cloud • Our target audience for UTMC was 17-30 year olds that fall within the boundaries of C1C2DE who tend to listen to radio 4 extra, recently changed from BBC Radio 7. As it is a Post-apocalyptic thriller, we felt that the genre may appeal more to a male orientated audience, yet females may also engage with it. Definitive elements which we aimed to utilise were: Distinctive characters, a dark, almost shocking plot, and a unique, “never been done before” narrative. • The audience influenced our planning in a variety of ways. Firstly, as our drama was intended for a highly male dominated audience, we liked the concept of making a drama that borrowed elements of a popular videogame, ‘Fallout’. Our audience like videogames, and so as such, it felt appropriate to utilise this. • The themes of death, destruction and of a darkness absorbed within this bleak and desolate landscape were ultimately what we wanted to achieve through our posters and features. The only regulation issue was that our drama involved a difficult matter of ‘suicide’, yet as it would be aired after the 9pm watershed this issue was easily avoided.

  4. Rough cut • Creating a radio drama aimed at young people, teenage/early 20 year olds, is new and exciting and the plot would have to be relevant to today's society. In an age where most people use multi-media technology for entertainment (television has visual and audio, the internet…) popularity of radio dramas is decreasing. • Therefore the group found it important to think of a strong, unique storyline to engage a contemporary audience. In previous years, radio dramas have been predominantly male-orientated, with men being the protagonists, narrators and main characters. (e.g. the dominant voice in War of the Worlds is male). So, because now we seem to live in a  more feminized world, we thought it was important that our protagonist was female and overall that the drama was aimed at a female target audience. • This would bring our drama up-to-date with modern times, appeal to a new audience and make our work more unique. Taking this into account, we came up with the idea of a fashion show and two rival women fighting against each other in this business. We thought this would appeal to a modern audience as fashion is essential part of our modern, consumer driven lifestyles. So, to appeal to our target audience, we decided our drama would have a: • Strong female protagonist • Mainly female characters • Be set in London – appropriate setting for theme (fashion show) • Plot centered around fashion – appeal to consumer lifestyle of target audience, and stereotypically, young women.

  5. AS Magazine Articles • My publications of choice for my articles was Heat and Nuts magazine. The target audience for Heat was young women interested in fashion, looks and celebrity gossip. To appeal to this group I chose a subject they would be interesting in – dieting, and a celebrity interview. I designed my layout in a similar way to a heat article (same color codes and textboxes etc) to make my work look realistic and appealing. • For Nuts magazine, I included mid-shots of attractive and provocatively dressed girls to attract the correct audience to my article as these pictures would appeal to them (heterosexual young men)

  6. Music Magazine - Rave • My target audience were dance and clubbing fans, so I ensured that I talked a lot about dance music and clubs in my magazine to maintain their interest. In this way, they also influenced my planning and the content that I included in my magazine; I knew what they expected to read about, so that is what I included. However, as I was talking about nightclubs, I realised that my magazine may have to be put on a higher shelf in the shop, so as not to attract the attention of a younger audience (under 18s) and entice them into going clubbing illegally.

  7. AS Flava Rava / A2 rough cut • In AS my target audience were female/male and aimed to 18+ people that can go to raves and clubs which also are a fan of dance music. • My target audience influenced my planning as I planned on getting young people to model which as I knew my audience it was easier to create. • In A2 my target audience were female 16-30year olds they were influenced in my planning as my audience was female I could show things which women like, I did this in my poster by showing designer labels D&G to draw my audience in also I used quote on fashion which would draw my audience in even more. As my drama is linked to relationships/cheating etc it is more aimed to a women as it’s a drama.

  8. AS Music Magazine • My magazine revolves around the rock/metal genre and so it is aimed primarily at a younger, male audience. • This made it necessary to include a certain style. I made sure to include various conventions of the genre like grungy style, broken, destroyed looking text, and I also used a deep purple colour as I felt it reflected the genre quite well.
