  7. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritIntroduction Sitting with someone you don't know so well! This is a lesson use when someone has a Pentecostal background. You need to go after these studies and know them cold. Can't be "afraid" of them. These are awesome studies. Remember the purpose of our class? • Solidify • Unify • Multiply Solidifying? Then you need to be solid on this study.

  8. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritIntroduction: Heb 6:1-3 • "Elementary Teachings about Christ" • Greek - Archees "Firsts of Christ." Firsts/Archees implication of teachings and principles "a the starts”) • Repentance, Faith, Instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands... • These two studies - "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" and "Miraculous Gifts of The Holy Spirit" • Instruction about "Baptisms.“ There are three we’ll talk about today. • Laying on of Handswill be covered in depth Wednesday.

  9. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritIntroduction: Reminders • When you study with someone, exchange in the readings, go around in the readings. • Always start a personal bible study with a prayer! • Today we'll cover some helpful terminology in understanding the Holy Spirit and it's various manifestations in the scriptures.

  10. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritIntroduction: John 3:34 John 3:34 (NIV 84) • Verse 34, “…God gives the Spirit without limit.” • The Greek here for "limit" is "Metron" which means literally "measure." John 3:34 (NASB) • Verse 34, “…He gives the Spirit without measure.” • We are going to break down the word measure when related to manifestations of the Holy Spirit into three distinct parts. • One measure we are already familiar with regarding the Holy Spirit's manifestation is the "Indwelling" of the Holy Spirit.

  11. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritIndwelling: Acts 2:38, Romans 8:9;11 Acts 2:38 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. • Everyone that has faith, repents (changes) becoming a disciple and is baptized receives the forgiveness of their sins and also the gift of the Holy Spirit living in you, or "dwelling" in you. Rom 8:9 (NIV84) 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. Rom 8:11 (NIV84) 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living [dwells] in you , he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives[dwelleth] in you . • The Greek here is "oikeo" and means "dwells" as in "occupy a house."

  12. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritIndwelling: Romans 8:11 Rom 8:11 (NASB) 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you. • We've already covered, therefore, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it living in you. One of the three “measures.” • The other two measures are the Baptism with the Holy Spirit and the Miraculous Gifts of the Holy Spirit. • We'll be covering the "Baptism with the Holy Spirit" today. • Wednesday we'll be covering the third measure "Miraculous Gifts of The Holy Spirit"

  13. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritFive Characteristics (Acts2& Acts10) • Promise, not a command • Predicted (Prophecy) • Came without warning • Ability to speak other languages • Ushered in the Kingdom of God on earth. Today, Reviewing the two occurrences of the Baptism With The Holy Spirit in Acts 2 [for the Jew] and Acts 10 [for the Gentile].

  14. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritPromise (not command) Acts 1:4-5 (~33AD, or 4BC/29AD) • The command? Do not leave Jerusalem. He does not command the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Why? The promise, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is coming. Why is it coming? • What has Jesus spoke about? (Acts 1: 3 "After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.") • Jesus spoke about the Kingdom for 40 days, it was the gift that was connected with the Baptism With The Holy Spirit.

  15. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritPromise (not command) Mark 9:1, Acts 1:7-8 We understand from the "Coming of The Kingdom" study that the Kingdom of God is to come with power. It is ushered in by power. When it begins on earth, when it comes on earth, it will be with power. And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." Mark 9:1 So how does this play into the baptism of the Holy Spirit? He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive powerwhenthe Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:7-8

  16. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritPromise (not command) Mark 9:1, Acts 1:3-5 & 1:7-8 • The POWER (Mark 9:1) to usher in the "gift [Jesus'] Father has promised " (Acts 1:3-5 - context: The Kingdom of God) is bestowed by the Baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:7-8). • The Baptism with the Holy Spirit then is a • (1) A Promise from Christ (it's coming!) and Mark 9:1 and in Acts 1:7-8 clarify it comes with Power, to usher in the Kingdom of God.

  17. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritCame Without Warning Acts 2:1-4 • They were not specifically praying for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. • Pentecost - 50 days after the Passover. • Passover - Exodus, angel of death passing over the homes with the blood of the Passover lamb on their doorposts. • Feast that celebrates the first fruits of the harvest. • Remember this from the coming of the Kingdom study...

  18. The Baptism With The Holy Spirit Came Without Warning Acts 2:1-4 • "They" - referring to the 120. • What is going on!? They were not even "praying." They were together for yet another "meeting of the body." • Blowing of a violent wind. Tongues of fire separating on them. • When tongues of fire are “resting” on your head - you know something is happening!

  19. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritAbility to speak in other languages (“tongues”) • "...filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. "Acts 2:4 • Let the bible interpret the bible here – what are “other tongues?”. • “When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.” Acts 2:6 • Speaking in other tongues in the bible then, is the ability to speak known languages without ever studying them!

  20. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritPredicted (Prophecy) Acts 2:6-18 Acts 2:17 "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. • Understand from the Kingdom study, this is how the Kingdom of God is ushered in. • Not the last days of humankind, but "the last days of the temple" the "last days" of the ceremony, the temple, and the physical nation of Israel, obliterated by Titus in 70 AD • Why end the “physical nation of Israel?” • God has a New Kingdom, spiritual "Israel.“ (Luke 17:20-21 “Within you…”) • Because of the amazing sound and the power baptism of the H.S. • They go out preach in these other languages and it draws a huge crowd! • When the crowd gathers – who stands up? Peter – he talks about Jesus' death burial and resurrection.

  21. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritPredicted (Prophecy) Acts 2:36-38 Acts 2:36-38 & Acts 2:41 • Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Acts 2:41 First occasion of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2) 1 - Promise from Jesus. (Acts 1:4-5) 2 - Predicted, a fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel. Acts 2:17. • Important, must understand, it is not a command. A promise and a prediction/prophecy. 3 - Came without warning. • Some believe you pray, then Holy Spirit comes on you...they were not in control and not expecting this. 4 - The ability to speak in real languages. 5 – It’s purpose, as we studied about before, is that it would usher in the Kingdom of God with Power. Mark 9:1, and even Luke 24:49 • I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

  22. The Baptism With The Holy Spirit“All people?” Acts 2:17 • God was going to pour out his Spirit to the Jews...this they understood. • However, what about the Gentiles - God knew the Jews needed to be shown that they were part of this same promise. • This brings us to our second instance of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. • Their concept of this ("all people") all of their great prophets, but now the Holy Spirit not just on God's special leaders - but now it going to be on all people...also on the women... • They still did not understand - God had to usher in the Kingdom for the Gentiles.

  23. The Baptism With The Holy Spirit“The Gentiles” Acts 10 • To the Gentiles • -begins with Cornelius (Acts 10) a. Note: Cornelius and his household were water baptized in v. 48, saved at baptism. b. Peter explained his actions to the Jews. (Acts 11:1-18) c. “At the beginning” (Acts 11:15)

  24. The Baptism With The Holy SpiritDoes the Baptism With The Holy Spirit exist today? Ephesians 4:4-6: There is one baptism – which one? (Written about 60-62 A.D.) There are three options: 1. John’s baptism – Passed when the new covenant began. (Acts 19:1-5) 2. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2 and 10) – is no longer present as it was a prophecy/promise that has been fulfilled. It was never a general command for all Christians. 3. Baptism with water in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. a. Jesus commanded this baptism. (Matthew 28:18-20) b. This baptism is recorded all the way through the book of Acts and the Epistles. 1Peter 3:21 (written around 64 A.D.) makes reference to this water baptism of salvation. c. It had to be the one baptism of Ephesians 4:4-6 as it was the only one practiced by 60-62 A.D. when Ephesians was written.
