  3. Standards • We follow the Common Core State Standards set forth by the State of California.

  4. Our Goal for Students • To create a learning environment where the children feel safe to take risks, are motivated and enthusiastic about learning, and develop compassion and respect for one another.

  5. LANGUAGE ARTS • Houghton Mifflin • RtI – response to instruction • Early Intervention Reading Model – discuss at conferences • Writer’s Workshop- Units of Study (narrative, descriptive, research report, letter, story, instructions) • Spelling vs. High-Frequency • Handwriting Without Tears

  6. MATH • Mathematical Reasoning & Problem Solving • CGI Cognitively Guided Instruction • Number Fluency and Number Sense • Algebraic Thinking begins in Kindergarten & 1st Grade • Measurement and Geometry threaded throughout the year • Strong emphasis on math vocabulary • We are adopting a new math series called My Math

  7. SOCIAL STUDIES • Reflections curriculum • Citizenship: Developing respect for self, others, and the community. • Awareness of cultures of the world • Patriotism and Map Skills • Values

  8. SCIENCE • Foss Science Kits • Physical Science (States of Matter) • Earth Science (Air and Weather) • Life Science (Plants) • Scientific Process Skills (through experiments)

  9. HEALTH • The Great Body Shop K-12 program • 10 units of study include: • Safety, body systems, nutrition, social and community health, emotional health, growth and development, substance abuse prevention, illness prevention, environment and consumer health, and fitness

TECHNOLOGY/LIBRARY • Computer lab 30 minutes per week –Basic computer skills • Power Point and LCD projector in every classroom • Library once a week – check out books that are kept in the classroom • Laptop cart and iPads for the school • iPads for 1st grade (grant) • Any obsolete technology is greatly appreciated!

  11. MUSIC / P.E./Art • Music every other week with a music teacher • P.E twice a week *make sure your child wears tennis shoes and comfortable clothing. *children should be wearing tennis shoes everyday for playground safety at recess and lunch • Arts Advantage lessons

  12. HOMEWORK • Homework posted each Friday • Homework is due every Friday • Plan on spending 20-30 minutes per night – building responsibility, not frustration • Check your child’s work!!!! ***Most important: Read each night with your child!

  13. Math Homework • Math Homework will be sent home weekly for the first unit • Please do not go ahead as those concepts have not been taught in class yet • Please turn in math homework or signed pacing guide on the due date

  15. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT • Sticker Cards / Treasure Chest • Table Points • Classroom incentives – NO TREATS • Contract – if needed!

  16. PBIS • Positive Behavior Intervention Support - school wide behavior system to reinforce appropriate behavior in all areas of the school : classroom, playground, inside (hallways, computer, library) A.I.R. – Accountability, Integrity, Respect - assemblies and awards

  17. Special Programs • Special Me– sample of poster, schedule sent home • Charlie’s Story Club in January • Big Buddies – once a month • Classroom Volunteers – we love and need you!!! • Birthdays –NO FOOD PLEASE • Snack and lunch - healthy foods only!!! • Scholastic Book Orders

  18. Volunteers • Please join the PTA – they support many extras • RtI volunteers may help in another room than their child • Volunteers only help in the classroom, not outside at recess and lunch • WE LOVE AND NEED YOU !!!!!!!

  20. REMINDER!!!! • Free and Reduced lunch applications • Parent volunteer applications • Please check lunch account to make sure there are funds • Students need to memorize their lunch number • Classroom Donations-place in tan box • Sign up for a conference time at your teacher’s table
