  6. But first…………………… In one minute (each), share with a partner: • What was the highlight of your summer? • What are you most thankful for right now? • What are your hopes for this school year? Be prepared to “popcorn” out outcomes of this conversation.

Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment provides New Teachers (you!) the opportunity to: • Share and reflect on educational experiences • Take your instruction to the next level more quickly • To network with teachers from other districts • To follow the pathway to clear your credential • Participate in a “Data proven” program - teachers stay in the professional longer and are more satisfied with their work • Engage in FACT events that act as a scaffold to help you build on your professional experiences

  8. Support Provider (SP)- Veteran teacher assigned to support new teacher through both years of the BTSA Induction program. Sometimes referred to as mentor, advisor, confidant, shoulder to cry on, etc. TRUST AND CONFIDENTIALITY • Participating Teacher (PT)- Teacher participating in BTSA Induction. Sometimes refered to as new teacher, beginning teacher, rookie, etc.

You are required to complete the following to be eligible for a clear credential: • Work closely with your Support Provider for two years • Complete the formative assessment process (FACT) with your Support Provider • Participate in the seminars and corresponding professional development • Submit a portfolio documenting your competence in the 4 Induction Standards

  10. Induction Content Standards: • Standard 5 - Pedagogy • Standard 6 - Universal Access - Equity for all Students • Standard 6a - Teaching English Learners • Standard 6b - Teaching Special Populations

  15. Seminar Responsibilities & Expectations: • Required attendance at 6 seminars and colloquium (year 2) • Support Providers attend first 5 - 6 seminars and colloquium • Sign in! That is how you are given credit for attending • Seminars will start and end on time • Prime opportunity for networking & collaboration with colleagues; come ready to participate and “be present”

  16. : Formative Assessment for California Teachers (FACT) • Modules are designed as a scaffold to help you build on your professional experiences • The Induction Program takes place of graduate university coursework; treat it with the same level of reflection and professional responsibility!

  17. Your district provides: • Support Providers • District analysis and monitoring of credentials • A Program Advisor keeps track of the many details to ensure that each Participating Teacher is on track to clear their credential within the time frame given by the State of California

  20. FAQs • State funding is restricted to the first two years as a teacher of record on a preliminary credential. Teachers who delay starting BTSA/Induction will be responsible for the cost of the program when they are no longer eligible for state funding. The cost of BTSA Induction is currently $5,809 per year.

  21. FAQs My credential is good for five years. Can I wait until my second year of teaching to start Induction?

FAQs Why do I have to do all this? • The state designed Induction to accomplish several objectives: • Induct new teachers into our profession to promote teacher retention and thus, student achievement • Provide a means for new teachers to reflect on their teaching practice and collaborate with others to enhance their teaching practice • demonstrate that the elements of the standards are being applied in their classroom before being issued a professional credential

  23. My preservice program prepared me well for the demands of the classroom. Why do I need to repeat what I’ve already learned? • Preservice preparation provides the foundation and theoretical framework for effective teaching. • Induction provides the opportunity to deepen understanding and apply and demonstrate it in everyday practice.   24. FAQs What if I don’t like my Support Provider? • Our Support Providers are chosen for both their effectiveness as classroom teachers and their skill and ability working with adult learners. If your combined best professional efforts cannot resolve issues, please contact your Program Advisor, and they will be willing to work with you to find another Support Provider.
