  1. Libyan Revolution: Finally Free Nathan Williams Pd.2 Libya

  2. Libya on the map • Libya is located on the northern side of Africa bordering countries such as Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt. • Libya also borders the Mediterranean sea from the south.

  3. How it all Started • After Libyans witnessed what had happened in both Tunesia and Egypt, the people began to gather and protest in the streets over the oppressive regime of Gadafiand the state of the country. • Like these other countries, the Libyan revolution was aided greatly by social networks such as Twitter and Facebook through rapid communication.

  4. Overview on What Happened • Riots break out in mid February essentially starting the revolution. • Foreign governments and world powers begin to search for Gaddafi and arrest him for his crimes. • Despite these efforts, brutal crimes are still commited by Gaddafi and his troops. • Gaddafi’s troops and the rebels made up of civilians continue to fight violently with all sorts of weaponry. • Gaddafi is chased for a long period of time until Mid October when in the town of Sirte, he was surrounded and killed.

  5. Rebel Leader: Mustafa Abdul Jalil • Born in 1952 and took office of the Transitional government in Libya in March of 2011. • Mustafa Abdul Jalil is the official leader of the transitional government who took out Gaddafi and his cabinet. He officially declared liberation recently causing a celebration across all of Libya.

  6. Government Leader: Moammar Gaddafi • He was born June 1942, in his hometown of Sirte. He also died there, in October of 2011. • Gaddafi first took office as Libyan president in March of 1977. • Gaddafi was a brutal leader conducting mass murder and other acts of brutality throughout his serving as president. • His actions led to the revolution that ended in his death.

  7. Similarities to American Revolution • Both revolutionaries fought against an oppressive government. • Both governments had thieving and brutal leaders • Both rebel groups ended the revolutions in the surrounding of the opposing armies. • Both revolutions started due to unfair circumstances in the economy and in politics.

  8. Differences to American Revolution • In Libya, no organized battles were fought where as in the American revolution, most battles were fought in an open field in organized march. • In Libya, much of the organization was accredited to the internet and social networks where in the seventeen hundreds, internet was non-existent. • In Libya, the revolution was caused mainly by the previous success of other countries protesting where as in America, the rebels never had a template for success.

  9. Libya: What Now? • I think that now that the oppressive government is now gone, Libya will become a more democratic country and continue to recover as a whole from the revolution similar to what the colonists did after their revolution.
