After WWII the U.S. and the Soviet Union became superpowers • Military alliances…NATO= in Western Europe/led by America …Warsaw Pact=in Eastern Europe/Soviet led • Iron Curtain- line between Democratic West and Communist Eastern Europe • Star Wars- missile defense program created by Ronald Reagan

Arms Race • After WWII both nations increased weapons possessions including nuclear weapons • Disarmament talks were held to reduce the threat of nuclear war • A.B.M.’s were a major threat due to their ability to offer safety and cause nations to attack • Détente(1970s)… relaxed period between U.S. and Soviet Union

  5. Cuban Missile Crisis Fidel Castro • Led a revolution and became Cuba’s leader in 1959 • Bay of Pigs Invasion- JFK attempted to overthrow the regime, but failed • The Soviets sent nuclear missiles to Cuba and the U.S. blockaded island…NikitaKhrushchev later removed the missiles

  6. Nikita Khrushchev • denounced Stalin’s abuse of power, increased tolerance and loosened censorship Leonid Brezhnev • ruled more like Stalin had done McCarthyism….Red Scare • U.S. hunt for communists in gov’t and society
