  3. What influences our lives? The Accounts of Jesus’ Birth and Early Life as Recorded in the Synoptic Gospels Matthew and Luke sought to convey the significance of Jesus’ birth both to the Jewish people (the descendants of David) and to all humanity (the descendants of Adam) in light of what had been foretold in the Scriptures and fulfilled in Jesus. The people’s anticipation and joy at the birth of a Messiah must have influenced Jesus’ life tremendously.

Matthew 3:13-17 Jesus presents himself to John for baptism. Luke 3:21-22 The Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus like a dove and a voice from heaven says ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

Mark 1:12-13 Mark simply states that Jesus went to the wilderness and was tempted by Satan as the angels waited on him. Luke 4:1-13 Luke’s account is very similar to Matthew’s.

Matthew 14:22-23 Mark 1:21-28 Mark 3:1-6 Mark 5:23-29 Luke 5:1-11, 40-44 Luke 18:35-43
