Different types of relationships on individuals • Family: Consists of people we are related to by ties of blood, marriage, adoption, civil partnership or cohabitation. • How would you define the following? • Extended • Nuclear • Reconstituted • Single Parent
Extended family • Any family larger than a nuclear family, which usually includes three generations: grandparents, parents and children. Family members saw each other frequently. • There are different types of extended family: • Matrilocal – living with or near to the wife’s family: a local saying was: “A son’s a son until he gets a wife. A daughter’s a daughter all her life” • Patrilocal – living with or near to the husband’s family • Neolocal – the couple set up their own home
Extended family • How do families influence an individual’s health and wellbeing? • For example : • Self esteem? • Levels of stress and anxiety? • Men can dominate their wives • The mother/housewife role can be unsatisfying • The happy family image has a darker side eg domestic violence • Women’s choices can be limited eg staying single, being a single parent, having a same sex partner could be considered • Christmas arrangements • Have a strong support network for helping with family life • Support each other financially and help with the development of children
Reconstituted Families • Reconstituted or blended families: a family in which one or both partners has been married or cohabited before, and has a child or children, creating step-relationships • If a relationship ends, children usually stay with their mother, so in most reconstituted families children live with their biological mother and their step-father. In 2008 around 40% of families with dependent children are reconstituted families
Reconstituted Families • How do reconstituted families influence an individual’s health and wellbeing? • For example : • Self esteem? • Levels of stress and anxiety? • A new family provides an opportunity to form a successful family • However, they have a higher than average failure rate and a risk of conflict (between step-children and step-parent)
Nuclear families • The nuclear family means just parents and children living together in one household. It is sometimes known as the two-generation family, because it contains only two generations of parents and children. In 2008, 37% of families lived in this type of family
Nuclear families • How can nuclear families effect an individual’s health and well-being, self-esteem and levels of stress and anxiety? • Husband and wife may not be happy and only staying together for the sake of the children • Husband and wife have different roles – the breadwinner, “Englishman’s home is his castle”. • Men can dominate women • Women have fewer choices • Darker side – domestic violence • Although not every member may live near each other, they stay in regular contact via social network sites and phone
Working relationships and influences on health and well being • Teacher/student • Line managers • What effects do they have on an individuals health and wellbeing eg self esteem, levels of stress and anxiety? • Could improve or worsen a person’s self-esteem depending on the expectations of the teachers/line managers are

Intimate and sexual relationships and influences on health and well being • What effects do they have on an individuals health and wellbeing eg self esteem, levels of stress and anxiety? • Peer pressure to take part in certain activities?
