  2. Idiom • “Figure of speech”

  3. Idiom • Group of words that say one thing, but mean something completely different.

  4. Examples of Idioms: “It was a piece of cake!” Meaning: It was easy to do

  5. Examples of Idioms: • “Keep your eyes peeled!” • Meaning: • Watch Carefully

  6. Put your money where your mouth is. Meaning: Don’t just talk about something, buy it or invest in it.

  7. You are dead meat! • I’m angry with you. (threatening)

  8. Now think of your OWN idioms to write and illustrate! Or visit:

  9. Simile • Comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”

  10. Simile • The 2 unlike things do have to have at least one thing in common though…

  11. Examples of Simile: Jennifer eats like a pig. (Both Jennifer and a pig are messy eaters)

  12. Examples of Simile: • Jake was as happy as a kitten with a new ball of yarn. • (both Jake and the kitten • are happy)

  15. Onomatopoeia • A word that imitates the sound it describes

  16. Examples of Onomatopoeia: • Bang • Buzz • Crash • Ring

  18. Personification • Describing something non-human, as if it were human

  19. Examples of Personification: • Thecouch groaned under the weight of the entire family. • The dog cried pitifully.

  22. Examples of Hyperbole: He was so angry, steam came out of his ears.

  23. Examples ofHyperbole: • She practiced the piano for such a long time, her fingers bled.

  29. Examples of Metaphor: • My mother is a blanket, warm and comforting. • The train was a howling monster as it hurtled down the track.
