John H. R. Ellis “That was a nice little talk this morning (or evening), Father.” These words, said by someone in all sincerity at the church door nearly every weekend are evidence of how frequently the priest’s homiletical task is misunderstood. Too often his responsibility, “to preach the Word of God” is understood to mean the entertainment of an audience instead of the edification of a congregation in God’s Church. FPO 29 30 Corporate Communion – Holy Redeemer A homily, on occasion, may be pleasant to hear, with genuine touches of humor, it may in some cases be eloquent and a delight to the ear. Its purpose, however, is always that of a dialogue between one who is ordained to speak in God’s Name and those who have been baptized in that Name. A homily is never a monologue, even though it is spoken by only one person, the homilist. A homily is the communication, in words, of the meaning of God’s act in Christ to those who accept Jesus as the Word of God. Without some prior commitment to the Gospel of Christ and a willingness on the part of those who listen to discover new dimensions of discipleship, no congregation can “hear” a homily, much less respond to its message. Upcoming Key Dates • Nov 4th: First Degree Ceremony Council Hall Candidates arrive 6:30 PM • Nov 7th: 10:00 AM Council Spelling Bee • Nov 14th: 11:00 AM State Soccer • Nov 18th 6:30 PM Social. We’re Honoring the Police and Firefighters of the year for Kissimmee, Saint Cloud and Osceola County. It is our Thanksgiving Social, so you only have to pay $2, no need to bring a covered dish.. However, bring some Holiday Themed canned food or dry good for our Turkey Drive: Yams, Mashed Potato, Stuffing, Cranberry Sauce, etc. This is our WORKS of MERCY • Nov 22nd coffee/donuts at Saint Thomas Aquinas • Nov 27th – 28th: Fourth Degree Exemplification • Nov 29th: Corporate Communion Holy Redeemer • Dec 12th – 10:00 AM District Spelling Bee • Jan 3rd – Corporate Communion – St. Thomas Aquinas • Jan 9th – 11:00 AM Regional Spelling Bee • Jan 16th – 10:00 AM Council Free Throw • Jan 30th – 10:00 AM District Free Throw It is significant that in its Biblical context the word “hear” carries the implication of “obey.” To be heard most effectively, a homily should occur in the context of the Mass, where it can make clear and relevant the themes of faith found in the Holy Scriptures, the liturgy and the tradition of the Church. Those who listen to the homily have a right to expect that the truth of God will be set forth with honesty, vigor and charity by the homilist. But for their part, they must be prepared to be attentive and responsive to his message. Without the ministry of listening the ministry of preaching cannot be fulfilled. Fr. Alfredo Ortiz, Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish from Poinciana is named the Honoree of the Second Degree Exemplification held October 24, 2009 at our council hall in Kissimmee.

  2. District Deputy Report ANTHONY M. ‘TONY’ COSTANTINI DISTRICT DEPUTY, DISTRICT 24 DISTRICT DEPUTY #24 ANTHONY (TONY) – ALICE CONSTANTINI 407-247-6907 DISTRICT WARDEN STEVE YOUNG – AURORA 863-427-6249 The next couple of months, I’ll be starting my messages with a thank you. The reason is we are into our District, Regional and State youth competitions in soccer, basketball and spelling. On October 10, we held our District Soccer Challenge. The following Knights and wives from at least 3 different Councils assisted with signup, scoring, retrieving errant shots, and doing anything that had to be done to make it a great day for the young ones.: Steve Young (District Warden District 24), Joe Martin, Lynn DeCarlo, Thomas Hynek, Lynn Aguiar, Jerry Stromier, John Hardin GK 6624, Cindy Hardin, Luis Soto, Mateo Ponce, Candy Cartegena, S. Dela Cruz, Richard Pelozo, Jorge Garcel, Elba Garcel Hector Levy, Willie Alvardo and of course Mark and Bea Gervia who always make sure that everyone has something to eat and drink. Thank each and every one of you for a job well done, and I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Regional and State events to come. This group I have mentioned above have displayed just one facet of what the Knights of Columbus is all about. There was a job that needed to be done, and they all stepped up to the plate and did their part. No one had to beg or coax them. They came, they saw, and they participated.
