  1. Science 101EQ: What are the types of scientific knowledge? Hypothesis, Theories and Laws

  2. Disciplines of Science • Study of the natural world • Biology / Life science – study of living things • Geology / Earth science – study of the Earth • Physical Science – study of nonliving matter and energy

  3. Hypothesis • Def: A prediction that can be tested. • NOT an educated guess • Tentative explanation for what is being tested • You should and CAN test this • Does NOT indicate that it will b/c a theory

  4. Theories • DEF: An explanations of events (actions) based scientific knowledge • ****A coherent explanation that undergoes constant testing and often revision over time**** • Results of many observations & experiments • Explain the hypothesis • Has the ability to explain a law that has been made • Supported by large amount of evidence • Name some theories you know:

  5. Laws • Def: Description of a specific relationship under given conditions in the natural world • The way the world works • DO NOT explain why things behave the way they do • Simply explain how things behave • Descriptions and NOTHING MORE • Name some laws that you know:
