  1. The Scientific method Intro: 1D, 1P

  2. What is Science? • Write your answer on a post-it

  3. What is Science? • A process of investigating in a logical and controlled manner i.e.The scientific method. • A base on knowledge of understanding about the physical universe around us. Note: Information gained by the investigating method (I), adds to the knowledge & understanding part of science (II). This is why our Scientific knowledge is ever changing.

  4. Save the Grape Challenge • What uses could the grape-inator serve in the “real world”? • What uses could your protective contraption serve in the “real world”? • What did you learn from this activity?

  5. To think like a Scientist you must… Brainstorm as a class…

  6. To think like a Scientist you must… • Be curious (ask questions) • Hypothesize • conduct controlled “tests” or experiments • make many observations • collect accurate data • Analyze your data • Make Inferences from your observations. • Draw Conclusions • Adapt your experiment and understanding for the next time!

  7. The Scientific Method • What is it? • What are the steps?

  8. http://mrdispenza.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/observation.308111416.pdfhttp://mrdispenza.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/observation.308111416.pdf • Observations • Use one or more of the 5 senses to gather information • A noting and recording of FACTS Examples:

  9. Inferences • Logical interpretation based upon prior knowledge and experience (Based upon observations) Example: *Be aware not to let inferences affect your observations, and not all observations create the accurate inferences!

  10. Blast off lab • Do you remember this lab from last year?

  11. Blast off lab • Do you remember this lab from last year?

  12. What variables were present? (what affected the time to Pop?) • Were there problems with the design?

  13. Gummy Bear Catapult

  14. Possible real world uses? • What would be considered successful? • What factors affect this variable?

  15. Scientific Method approach • Problem or Purpose? • Hypothesis • Materials • Procedure • Observations • Results & Analysis • Conclusion
