  3. AYURVEDA • AYU + VEDA = AYURVEDA “AYU” means Life & “VEDA” stands for Science “Science of life” Or “Knowledge of life” Thus the term Ayurveda stands for science in which the knowledge of life exists, by knowing which one can enjoy longer and healthier life

  4. Goals of Ayurveda • Maintenance of health in healthy • Relief of abnormal states of health in ailing

Health is….. • PRAKRUTI SUKHA – Leading life in accordance with nature • DHATU SAAMYA – Balanced state of constituents of life Signs and symptoms of health • Desire for food (Normal appetite) • Uneventful process of digestion and metabolism • Proper elimination of wastes • Feeling of lightness • Focused senses • Timely sleep • Good strength and complexion • Mindfulness

  6. Need for good health • DHARMA – Duty/Virtuous acts/Moral conduct/Integration • ARTHA – Achievement/Goals/Fruits of work • SUKHA – Joy/Happiness/Pleasure/delight • MOKSHA - Liberation Substrata of life SATHVA ATMA SHAREERA

  7. Universe and the Man • Man is the epitome of the universe • There exists as much diversity in him as in the Universe outside him • Also there is as much similarity in the universe as in Man.

  8. ATMA • Module responsible for CHETANA • CHETANA all expressions of life with senses • Purpose – Gain knowledge • PRANA DHARANA – Sustenance of Life • JEEVANA VRUTTI – Life activities • Devoid of any idiosyncrasy

  9. Hosts for diseases • SHAREERA – Physical body • SATHVA – Mind • All diseases affect the body and mind, thus they are psychosomatic. • VATA, PITTA, KAPHA – Bodily pathogenic factors • RAJAH, TAMAH – Pathogens of mind

  10. Doshas • VATA – Air + Space Influenced by RAJAS • PITTA – Fire + Water Influenced by SATVA • KAPHA – Earth + Water Influenced by THAMAS KAPHA PITTA VATA

  11. Qualities of VATA: • ROOKSHA = Dry • LAGHU = Light • SHEETA = Cold • KHARA = Rough • SOOKSMHA = Minute (All pervading) • CHALA = Mobile Like the CROW

  12. Qualities of PITTA • SNEHA = Unctuous • TEEKSHNA = Sharp (Penetrating) • USHNA = Hot • LAGHU = Light • VISRA = Viscous • SARA = Fluid • DRAVA = Liquid Like the EAGLE

  13. Qualities of KAPHA • GURU = Heavy • SHEETA = Cold • MRUDU = Soft • SNIGDA = Unctuous • MANDA = Slow • STHIRA = Stable • SANDRA = Think Like the SWAN

  15. RAW VATA • Body – lean, unsightly • Skin – dry and rough • Hair – Scanty and dry • Voice – harsh, weak, broken • Sleep – unsound • Activity – talking, hasty, excitable, fearful, change mind quickly

  16. RAW VATA • Learning – quick to learn, quick to forget • Likes and dislikes – likes hot, dislikes cold • Personality traits – vain, cruel, jealous, impulsive, bites nails when tense • Strength – short-lived • Friendship - unsteady

  17. RAW PITTA • Body – medium, loose limbs • Skin – soft, yellowish tone • Lips, Nails, Palms, Eyes – reddish tone • Hair – bald, gray hair • Voice – soft, melodious • Sleep – moderate • Activity – intelligent, irritable, quarrelsome

  18. RAW PITTA • Learning – good memory, fast learning • Likes and dislikes – likes cold, dislikes hot • Personality traits – courageous, helpful, discriminating • Strength – medium • Friendship – steady, choosy

  19. RAW KAPHA • Body – hefty, large body frame • Skin – smooth and oily • Hair – soft, thick, long • Voice – melodious • Sleep – deep • Activity – slow, methodical

  20. RAW KAPHA • Learning – slow to learn, never forgets • Likes and dislikes – likes hot • Personality traits – patient, cheerful, broad-minded, amiable disposition, liberal, generous • Strength – constant • Friendship – steady, deeply attached
