  1. Islam The Younger Brother of Judaism and Christianity

  2. Islam begins • In the 7th Century a man named Muhammad was visited by Gabriel an Angel and told to recite Gods new word • Muslims believe that after Jesus’ life people went astray from the true religion of the old testament and needed a new prophet to fix problems in Judaism or Christianity • Muhammad was a part of a tribe called the Quraysh in the city of Mecca. The city made a lot of money because there was a temple (the Kabba) and lots of people would come to pay respects at the temple. • When Muhammad came and told the people of his tribe they needed to eliminate the gods in the Kabba and just worship God it didn’t go well

  3. Muhammad to Medina • Muhammad was forced out to a city called Yithrab which became known as Medina. • In Medina Muhammad received a lot of new revelations. These revelations would later be written down in the Quran (their version of the Bible) • Muhammad led his followers against the Meccans and conquered his former tribe. Rather than slaughter them he taught that God was forgiving and they too forgave them and allowed them to stay. He did however, clean the Kabba and encourage people to follow Islam

  4. New ideas in Islam • Islam has 5 pillars or parts of their religion that are followed today • 1. The Shahada is a profession of faith in God and in Muhammad his prophet • 2. the Salat is 5 prayers in the direction of Meccas that Muslims perform each day • 3. Sawm is a time of fasting celebrated in the holiday of Ramadan • Zakat means that Muslims believe they should give freely of their substance to poor people • The Hajj is a sacred pilgrimage or trip Muslims are supposed to take to Mecca in their life is possible.

  5. More from the Quran • There is a section of the Quran that is referred to as the Sword Verses. • The term Jihad refers to two fights that Muslims deal with in life • The chief Jihad is an internal battle of self between doing what is good and doing what is bad that all deal with • The lesser Jihad, although more popularized and misrepresented, deals with defending ones territory. It has to do with what some people call a holy war against other faiths. It DOES NOT say go kill Christians, rather, it states that if people attack you, you can defend yourself.

  6. After Muhammad • After Muhammad’s death there was a division in Islam • Sunni Islam are people that determined that the next leader of Islam should be elected to become a political leader or Caliph • Shia Islam believed that after Muhammad they should have chosen a relative of Muhammad's to be his successor. • Today most Muslims follow Sunni Islam which is popular in places like Indonesia, North Africa and most of the Middle East.
