  7. Year 10 Careers Education, Advice and Guidance at Stroud High School

SGS Schools’ Career Service • An impartial schools’ careers service set up by SGS College (previously Stroud College) in 2012. • Working in six schools in the Stroud area and ten schools across South Gloucestershire and Bristol. • Careers Matrix accredited after first year and members of the Careers Development Institute.

What do we do??? • We provide an impartial careers education and guidance service . • We work with year 8 - year 13. • We work with employers, training providers and professionals to gain industry and sector information. This means we can tell you about these options and widen your opportunities.

  11. Activities include… • Careers resources for students, websites, information sheets. • Careers interviews – optional and usually in year 9, 11 and 12/13. • 30 minutes to full day careers education activities. • Highlight opportunities, events and vacancies. • Arrange professional guest speakers to come in to give talks (year 11-13).

  13. Year 10 Careers Enrichment Day Full day of careers related activities, to include: “Ask The Professional” - Opportunity for the girls to interview a range of professionals. Skills and Qualities. Review of Work Shadowing experiences. Post 16 and Post 18 Options.

Work shadowing • A guide has been put together to include how to get started and where to look, with some contacts. • Work Shadowing Journal – for the year 10 girls to complete prior to and during their work shadowing placement. • These can be found and printed from the year 10 folders on the VLE.

  16. Opportunities • Ambitions Event” (evening) - Wednesday 12th November 2014 at Stratford Park Leisure Centre. • Girl Power – Women into Engineering at Renishaw New Mills – workshops and learning about careers in engineering. Saturday 29th November 2014. www.festomane.co.uk

  20. The DofE is… The DofE programme is a real adventure. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from. You just need to be aged between 14 and 24. You can do DofE programmes at three levels: • Bronze • Silver • Gold …which lead to a Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The DofE is… You achieve an Award by completing a personal programmeof activities in four sections: • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community. • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities. • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests. • Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.

  25. What you need to do This is NOT the expedition fee. The cost of the expedition is separate and we will write to you about this later. • Complete the Participant Enrolment Form with your daughter • Pay enrolment charge of £25 pounds by Oct 17th. Cheques payable to SHS. • Plan the activities with your daughter – help her decide!

  33. GCSE English Overview • English is made up of two different GCSEs –Language and Literature • The majority of the work done in year 10 is Controlled Assessment.

  34. GCSE English Assessment Controlled Assessment is marked by class teachers and subject to a rigorous standardisation and moderation procedure. Revision Guides York notes Although intended for AS Level, the ‘Advanced’ versions can be good for those aiming for an A*.

GCSE English Support • A Sixth form/Year 11 peer mentor • Extra work set and marked by teacher • Lunchtime sessions focusing on filling a gap in understanding • One to one sessions with class teacher or another teacher from the department • Meetings with Mr Dodd to establish areas of concern, developing a personal support plan

  36. GCSE Maths Overview • Year 10 will have regular assessments during the year and then an end of year examination • These do not count towards their GCSE but are important for them and us to know they are achieving their target gradesand to provide intervention where necessary

GCSE Maths Revision and Support • A letter will be going out inviting the year group to purchase CGP revision guides at a discounted price through the school • KS4 support will be taking place on a Wednesday lunchtime • Revision can also be done through websites such as www.mymaths.co.uk, GCSE Bitesize and MangaHigh

  38. GCSE Science Overview • There is an end of year exam in each Science subject to give students the experience of revising a lot of information • This is the first step towards a terminal assessment.

  39. GCSE Science Assessment • Students have clear guidance of expectations (e.g. revision list or a list of aims or sometimes revision cards) followed by an end of topic test. • Students who achieve a lower result than expected are given extra support and the test re-taken at a later date to ensure knowledge has been consolidated.

  40. GCSE Science Revision • Teachers are always available for help and students are encourage to seek help. • There are science learning communities for KS4 and KS5 on a Tuesday (in S3) and Friday (in S1) from 1.35pm. Students come to these sessions to ask questions, to revise, to do homework and help others revise

  41. Homework • There is no homework timetable for KS4 • Options subjects will give approx. 2 hours a fortnight • On- going revision and consolidation of topics
