4. Special Guest Hello students, I hear you’re learning about an explosive event in U.S. history. The Harlem Renaissance! What an amazing period for African Americans in New York City. I was there. It was a movement that celebrated the African-American culture in arts, literature, drama, dance and music. Music is my specialty. It was the Jazz age. Today in class you learned about friends of mine like Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and me Lena Horne. I performed at the famous Cotton Club in NYC. I won many awards for my Jazz music. I starred in many movies and television shows. When you were younger you may of saw me on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. Back in the days we use to say words like Daddy-O and cuttin the rug. We did dances called the suzy-Q. As you study more about the Harlem Renaissance you will realize how it helped America and the world see African-Americans as intellectuals. Tomorrow in class you will focus on literature of the Harlem Renaissance and learn about my friend Langston Hughes, a famous African-American poet.
