  2. Get To Know Your Teacher My name is Amber Howell and I have been teaching for 17 years. I have a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and a Master’s Degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction). I have been married to my husband, Joseph, for 17 years and we have 2 children. Ayden is entering 9th grade at Quartz Hill High School and Ethan is entering 5th grade this year at Gregg Anderson.

  3. Lunch and Snack 1st Grade Lunch Play: 11:00-11:25 Eat: 11:25-11:45 Lunch is $2.40 Milk is $.35 **Please pay ahead with checks or mypaymentsplus.com Cash must be in envelope with name, grade, and room # (B4) Snack recess each morning….please send your child with a nutritious snack!

  4. Attendance • Be punctual. 1st grade start time is 7:50, no drop-offs before 7:20. • Please call, the attendance phone line for all absences. (661) 722-0716 ext. 12900 • Avoid early pickups if possible. Reverse tardies will be calculated this year. • Independent study for absences of 5 or more days.

  5. Get Involved Volunteers are greatly appreciated and always welcome! You must have a current TB test on file, be fingerprinted, and have a photo ID badge made by the district. Please call 722-0716 ext. 100 for more information. All volunteers can begin after Labor Day.

  6. Uniforms Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately each day according to Gregg Anderson’s uniform policy and district dress code. Details are provided in the parent and student handbook.

  7. Star Student • Teacher’s Assistant for the week • Share “All About Me” poster • Special Share Friday – 1 item • Random selection every week

  8. Birthdays and Holidays • Only allowed 4 parties per year—Wellness Policy • Birthday treats---send in something other than food • Holiday parties….store bought treats only! June Box • No toys or school supplies that turn into toys. One warning, then items are confiscated until June or until parents pick up.

  9. Class Rules • Follow directions. • Raise your hand. • Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat. • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • Be kind to others. • Behavior is a choice. There are rewards • for good choices and consequences • for bad choices. • No one may take away another • student’s right to learn and feel safe, • or the teacher’s right to teach! 

Behavior Clip Chart Outstanding = 4 points Great Job = 3 points Good Day = 2 points Ready to Learn = 1 point Think about it = warning Teacher’s Choice = partial loss of recess Parent Contact = loss of full recess Weekly cummulative points equal Citizenship Grade. E = 15+ S+ = 10+ S = 5+ S- = 4 N = 3 U = below 3 Points are exchanged weekly for class money to use in our store.

  11. Classroom Rewards Once a month we will open a class store. The students will accumulate points through good behavior, attendance, and displaying positive character traits. The points will then be exchanged for class money. I ask for parent help in donating items to keep the class store stocked monthly.   12. Bathroom and Drink Policies There are appropriate opportunities throughout the day for using the restroom and getting drinks. Students are given 2 bathroom passes per week. Students will receive class money for not using their bathroom passes weekly. Water bottles are welcome in the classroom! Special needs are always accommodated. 

  13. Homework Policy Homework goes home on Friday and is due back the following Friday. For your convenience, homework packets will also be available for download on our class website. Thirty minutes of homework is the district policy for 1st grade. Your child will need Internet access for the optional technology part of their homework. The first homework packet will have more information.

  14. Grading Guidelines • Letter grades in reading, language arts, and math. “C” is grade level. • Reading = fluency and comprehension • Language Arts = writing, vocabulary, spelling, language arts activities and tests • Math = math quizzes, tests, and practice pages • “CT” = corrected together • “DT” = done together • Check Powerschool any time! New grades posted at least every 3 weeks.

After School Release There are four gates for dismissal Front Gate Mrs. Howell / Mrs. Smith / Mrs. Studt will be taking students to this gate for main parking lot Cafeteria Gate (Gazebo area) Mrs. Ewart will be taking students to this gate East of the cafeteria Twirl Gate Mrs. Moser will be taking students to this gate at the far East end of campus.

  18. STEM Many age appropriate science, technology, engineering, and math activities will be integrated into the district core curriculum. We have a school wide Friday STEM project calendar. Please check our website for these dates. I will be asking for donations and volunteers to help out with these projects. Ask your child about these fun and engaging activities, they will be excited to share!

  19. How can you help? • Join PTA • Donate to our classroom….supplies, treasure box, STEM materials • Send in Boxtops and empty ink cartridges • Order from Scholastic Book Orders • Volunteer in the classroom or at home!
