  2. MAJOR CONFLICTS • Person vs. Nature • Person vs. Nature: since they are versing the cold weather. The smell of the “corpse” is killing them so they have to go outside but sense its freezing out they get very ill and die from the cold. • Person vs. Self: he is struggling with the loss of his good friend and having to take him to his parents in Wisconsin.

  3. SETTING • The setting is a train with few people in the cabin. The train was heading for Wisconsin and it was snowing.

  4. THEME • General: Misunderstanding • Specific: they thought they would get sick from the smell but got sick from the cold.

  5. LITERARY ELEMENTS • Foreshadowing: they are trying not to die, by the stench, but they end up dying of the cold. • Irony: they didn’t want to get sick from the smell, but instead they got sick from the coldness. • Conflict: they didn’t want to end up getting sick from the smell but ended up getting sick from the cold.

  6. IMPORTANT POINTS • Thompson fell and landed on the awful smelling cheese and swallowed some and still thought it was the coffin. • They were so scared about getting sick from the smell that they went outside in the cold and ended up getting sick from the coldness.
