  1. Slang: gonna, coulda, like, lingo only certain people would understand or comprehend (inside jokes General Don’ts of Public Speaking • Profanity: sucks, shit, damn, bitch, “F” word, crap, slut, etc. • Racial, sexist, etc. Slurs: REMEMBER YOUR AUDIENCE! • Politically incorrect language or references: political parties and politicians, know difference between Hispanic and Latino or Mexican vs. Spanish or African-American vs. Jamaican, etc. • Stereotypes or generalizations: clique names such as “emo” or “jock”, etc. Don’t assume we know something BUT don’t dumb it down either.

  2. Know what you’re talking about. Example: animal rights and testing and vegetarianism—do your research. Remember who you are talking to and that they may actually know something about what your talking about, if not more than you do. • Shock value: Remember your responsibility as an ethical communicator. Do not shock your audience simply to shock them (i.e. Howard Stern). If you choose to include some sort of shock value in your speech, make sure that it is relevant and follows the standards of ethics and responsibility. • Appropriateness—no boobies, no butts, writing on shirts, hair in face, etc. General Don’ts of Public Speakingcont’d .

  3. General Dos of Public Speaking • Speak with authority, speak from your gut (speaking exercise) • Speak ethically and responsibly (recognize that there are consequences to your words) • Eye contact • Spray your words (speak to the entire class) • What’s your body language saying?

  4. What is communication? • Consists of the sender (transmits message), receiver (words, body language, and symbols that convey an idea), message (intercepts and interprets message; transmits feedback), and feedback (words, body language and symbols that respond to the sender’s message)

  5. Potential communication Barriers • Attitudinal (I don’t like what she’s talking about.) • Social (They’re not cool so I’m not going to listen to them.) • Educational (I’m too smart to learn anything from this speaker!) • Cultural (This person’s culture/heritage/traditions are so different from mine that I doubt they have anything to teach me.) • Environmental (e.g. a loud classroom)

  6. To rid communication barriers • THINK before you speak • ARTICULATE your words • WATCH the receiver, read their nonverbal communication to verify that you are communicating effectively.
