  2. Most wars start with Alliances • North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): • Canada & 10 other nations in N. America & Europe (now 28) • Attack on one member is considered an attack on them all • Warsaw Pact: • Established in 1955 • Military alliance of the USSR & 7 other Communist bloc countries • North American Air Defence Command (NORAD): • Established in 1957 to prepare for attack by air • Missile bases & air defence radar stations • The Commonwealth of Nations: • Former colonies of Great Britain • 53 member countries (the US isn’t in it!)

  4. Potsdam Conference 1945 • Truman & Stalin meet near Berlin after V-E day • Tries to get Stalin to leave Eastern Europe alone- FAILS
