  7. Minimal pairs Isolated, this can be confusing… So, it is important to use CONTEXT when you are confused.

  8. Minimal Pairs: Context E.g., Singapore is one of the world’s busiest ship ports, but it is a very small island with three million people (3,000,000). With little land and a high population, there are no animal farms; therefore, Singaporeans do not often talk about “sheep”. “I am going to visit my uncle’s ship / sheep today.”

  9. Minimal pairs – Using Context 1 2

  10. Minimal pairs – Using Context My mom brought home a cat/cut yesterday. My family took a ship/sheep from England to New York long ago. In the bible, killing is a sin/thin. Step one, put the eggs in the fan/pan. The university decided to ban/van smart phones from classrooms. I broke my list/wrist yesterday. It really hurt. Tony’s exam grades were really law/low. I would like a cap/cup of coffee, please.

  11. Practice Minimal pairs to listen for: Chip/Cheap Can/Ken Seat/Sit Gulls/Girls Thin/Sin Heart/Hurt

  12. Practice It was really noisy at the party. There were so many people because the beer was so cheap.“I hope we can find a good seat, Joan said. “Can Ken save some seats for us? I really want to sit.”

  13. Practice “Oh, my feet hurt, and I’m hungry. Pass me a chip, please.” said Ken. “But, give me a thin one, OK.? I’m trying to lose weight.” I need to walk for a while after this. Hey check out those gulls over there. How lovely.”
