  3. Minimal Pairs My mom brought home a cat/cut yesterday. My family took a ship/sheep from England to New York long ago. In the bible, killing is a sin/thin. Step one, put the eggs in the fan/pan. The university decided to ban/van smart phones from classrooms. I broke my list/wrist yesterday. It really hurt. Tony’s exam grades were really law/low. I would like a cap/cup of coffee, please.

  5. Listening Strategies First thing to remember: You don’t always need to catch EVERY word.  You don’t always catch every word in your native language; why expect to catch everything in a second language?

  6. Listening Strategies • Whenever you are listening, there is a purpose. • Examples: - Getting specific details for an assignment - Setting a meeting time - Getting personal information about a new person you have just met - Following instructions

  7. Listening Strategies: Context & Knowledge • When you listen, try to think about the situation. • Consider what kind of information may be important for the situation. • Use your previous knowledge to help you. (You have been having conversations since you were a child!)
