  8. Chronological Bible Discipleship Iva May and Dr. Stan May week twenty-five 1&2Kings/ 2Chronicles/Psalms

  9. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness through creation and His mercy in response to sin. Patriarchs: God reveals His response to the faithful-ness of men (Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph). Exodus: God liberates Israel, and leads them to the Promised Land and shapes them into a nation holy to Himself. Conquest: Joshua, relying on God’s presence and power, leads Israel to possess and settle the Promised Land. Judges: Every man does what is right in his own eyes, and Israel falls into a cycle of disobedience, judgment, oppression and deliverance (the sin cycle). Kingdom: Israel asks for a king and God raises up a succes-sion of kings who rule over a united Israel, beginning with Saul and ending with Solomon.

  10. Divided Kingdom Era • Rehoboam forfeits his right to rule a united Israel by ignoring the wise counsel of his elders • Solomon’s former servant, Jeroboam, leads a secession of ten of the tribes • Rehoboam is left to rule the Southern Kingdom (Judah), while Jeroboam begins his reign as king over the Northern Kingdom (Israel) • For fear of losing his kingdom, Jeroboam sets up “alternative” wor-ship sites in Israel, ignoring God’s Law and leading the people into idolatry • A rapid succession of Kings leads Israel further into idolatry • Final judgment 200 years later when they are carried off by Assyria • The succession of Judah’s kings alternates between those who are good and evil, resulting in a slower slide into idolatry and their eventual captivity in Babylon some 140 years after Israel

  11. Context • Israel is a nation divided • The Northern Kingdom, comprised of ten tribes, keeps the name of Israel • The Southern Kingdom, formed out of the remain-ing two tribes of Judah and Benjamin, is called Judah

  12. Context • All of Judah’s 19 kings descend from David • Not every king follows in David’s godly footsteps • Four kings fear God; seek to lead Judah in godliness • Four others experience times of spiritual renewal • The other 11 kings follow the ways of Jeroboam

  13. Overview • Judah’s monarchical history is a roller coaster of good and evil kings • Those that turn the nation back to follow-ing the LORD have an understanding of God’s Word • Jehoshaphat, son of Asa, was the great-est king of Judah’s early history • Became king at age 35 • Ruled for 25 years • Jehoshaphat seeks the LORD with great passion • God blesses his reign with several great victories for Judah

  14. Key Truth • Leaders who guide their people to love the Word make the nation great.

  15. Divided Kingdom Era 2 Chronicles 17,18,20 A Kingdom Divided, Judah Jehoshaphat’s Spiritual Life Jehoshaphat's Sincere Love for the Word Jehoshaphat’s Success in Battle Jehoshaphat’s Single Failure

  16. Jehoshaphat’s Spiritual Life 2 Chronicles 17:3-6

  17. Jehoshaphat’s Spiritual Life • Jehoshaphat Experiences the Presence of God Early in his Reign • His father Asa led a national revival of sorts • Jehoshaphat takes the throne on the heels of this revival • Jehoshaphat Demonstrates his Love for the LORD • He chooses to walk with Him and outwardly rejected the Baals • His heart takes delight (“great pride”) in the LORD • He removes the wooden images from Judah • He leads the nation to seek the LORD only

  18. Jehoshaphat’s Sincere Love for the Word 2 Chronicles 17:7-10

  19. Jehoshaphat’s Sincere Love for the Word • Jehoshaphat does not Love the LORD Privately • He Raises up Leaders to Teach Bible Literacy throughout Judah • Sends leaders, Levites and priests into the nation to teach the people • They take the Book of the Law with them • Begin to teach God’s law in all the cities of Judah

  20. Jehoshaphat’s Sincere Love for the Word • Promoting the Word of God throughout Judah Produces Real Results • The fear of the LORD falls on the neighboring kingdoms(10) • They refuse to go to war against Jehoshaphat • Jehoshaphat Personally Leads and Imple-mentsan Honorable System of Justice (19:4-7) • He goes out among the people of the entire nation to bring them back to the LORD • He calls judges to in all the cities to judge in fear of the LORD, without “partiality, nor taking of bribes”

  21. Jehoshaphat’s Success in Battle 2 Chronicles 18:31 & 20:1-4, 20-25

  22. Jehoshaphat’s Success in Battle • He Experiences Great Victories and Deliver-ance by the Hand of the LORD • Goes to war with Ahab of Israel against Syrians • Syrian captains attack Jehoshaphat by mistake • Jehoshaphat cries out • The LORD helps him by diverting the attackers

  23. Jehoshaphat’s Success in Battle • He Experiences Great Victories and Deliver-ance by the Hand of the LORD • Three nations come against Judah to attack the king • He gathers Judah, leads them to seek the LORD, praying one of the great prayers of the OT (5-12) • God answers their prayer by promising victory • The army marches out to battle led by singers singing praises to the LORD • Find that the three armies have annihilated each other • All Judah has to do is pick up the spoils • God places His fear on the nations; gives Judah rest

  24. Jehoshaphat’s Single Failure 2 Chronicles 20:35

  25. Jehoshaphat’s Success in Battle • Jehoshaphat’s Good Blesses his Nation, but he Fails in One Critical Area • Makes an alliance with Ahab, wicked king of Israel • Makes a follow-on alliance with Ahab’s son, Ahaziah • These Alliances have a Long Term Affect on the Ensuing Generations • Jehoshaphat’s son and grandson marry evil women (daughters of Jezebel) • They infect the Southern Kingdom with idolatry and immorality

  26. Conclusions • One leader with a heart for God can turn the hearts of a nation to God • One man in the right position of leadership with the right passion for the Word of God can saturate a nation with it • When we cry out to the LORD in our time of trouble, He will prove His power to help us • The man who trusts in the living God can turn the tide in the battle when he walks by faith • The good of our lives can be overshadowed by foolish choices with long-term consequences

  27. Discussion What characteristics make Jehoshaphat a godly leader? It is possible for our national leaders to do any of the things Jehoshaphat did in turning the people’s hearts to God? Seek after God, follow His commandments, forsake worldly idols Make overt boasts in the ways of the LORD Remove anything that might be considered an idol in our lives Send out officials and priests to teach the Bible to the people Personally go out and bring the people to God Appoint judges whose fear the Lord and judge righteously What does it mean to “fear the Lord”? What kind of changes must take place in our churches in order for NON-Christians to fear the Lord?

And they were three days taking the spoil because there was so much.’”(2 Chron 20:25) • Jehoshaphat built a fleet of ships to go to what land in order to look for gold? • Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshishto go to Ophir for gold, but they did not go for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber.” (1 Kings 22:48)
