  3. 1- AIMS 3 Dr Nihad Almughany- Introduction to Interior Design- 2008 • This lecture aims to: • Review of the last lecture ( Styles of Interior Design). • Highlight the factors affecting the design of interior spaces. • Understand the characteristics of a valuable – well designed- interior space. • Understand the characteristics of the Palestinian traditional interior space. • Highlight the design criteria for some of familiar interior spaces.

  11. 6- DESIGN CRITERIA OF INTERIOR SPACES • Each interior space has special design criteria in terms of area, dimensions, furniture, colors, materials, systems, orientation and relationship with other interior and exterior spaces. • The following are examples for interior spaces design criteria : Dr Nihad Almughany- Introduction to Interior Design- 2008

  12. 6.1- LOBBY ( FOYER ) : • Location : Next to the outer door . • Dimensions : Depends on design . • Basic Elements : Cupboard , Mirror, Hanger . • Considered as a transition space between exterior and interior. • Contains some services like meters • Very important in public buildings – its area and furniture depends on the function of the building. • Reflects the building design, therefore , it must be well designed and decorated. .   14. 6.2- GUEST ROOM : • Location : Very close to entrance and foyer . • Close to Living and dining rooms . • Looks towards good views . • Provide privacy in location . • Dimension : Depends on design and area . • Basic Elements : Kanab, chairs, accessories . • Traditional “ majles “ : History and characteristics . • Room must be welcoming guests .   16. 6.3- LIVING ROOM ( FAMILY ROOM ) : • Location : In the middle . • Looks towards excellent views and the garden. • Close to guest and dining rooms . • Considered as a major space . • Dimension : Depends on design and area . • Basic Elements : Kanab, easy chairs, sofas, TV, library, fireplace, accessories . • Natural lighting and ventilation. • Quiet colors and appropriate paint .   18. 6.4 - WC ( Water Closet ) : • Location : very close to foyer, guest and living rooms . • Dimension : Depends on design and area ( min. = 100/140 cms ). Dimensions for elements are shown by instructor in the class . • Basic Elements : Toilet , Lavoratory , Lav. Cabinet, accessories, ( sometimes bathtub is included ). • Accurate selection for colors and accessories . • Paintings, wall paper, marble for walls are preferred than ceramics in guest wc . • Small curtains for windows .   20. 6.5 - Kitchen • Location: Close to the entrance and dining - best orientation is towards East or South East ( in Gaza). • Area : around 10% of house area – worktops around 18% of kitchen area. • Elements: Ref., sink, oven, dish washer, cupboards, dining table, accessories. • Work triangle : Ref., sink, oven – should not be interrupted by any furniture pieces. • Triangle parameter ranges between 4 – 8 m. • Each line not less than 1.25 and not more than 2.75 • Durable materials – heavy duty. • Ceramic walls and non- slipping flooring. • Dimensions will be discussed at class Dr Nihad Almughany- Introduction to Interior Design- 2008

  24. 6.6- DINING ROOM • Location: close to the kitchen and reception – orientation to good views. • Natural lighting is preferred. • Elements: dining table and seats, Cupboard ( opt.) and accessories. • Suitable colors and complementary arrangement. • Service circulation is very important. • Dimensions will be discussed at class.   27. 6.7- BED ROOMS • Location: • In a private place . • A way from noise. • Oriented towards East – Northern East. • Master Bed Room: Built in bathroom and dressing room. • Other bed rooms: appropriate furniture and colors for age and gender. • Basic furniture: beds, cupboards, mirrors. • Avoid beds under windows. • Availability of free space in the room is essential.   31. 6.8- BATH ROOMS : • Location : Very close to bed rooms and sometimes is imbedded within the room • Dimension : Depends on design and area ( Reg. = 180/250 cms ). Dimensions for elements are shown at class by instructor . • Basic Elements : Bathtub, Toilet , Bidet, Lavoratory , Shower, Cabinets, Accessories . • Accurate location for space elements . • Ceramics for walls and non- slipping flooring for floors. • Sometimes laundry is included ( Careful from moisture) .   34. 7- CONCLUSION • Interior design is affected by many factors that should be taken in consideration. • To be efficient, interior spaces should be functional, comfortable, beautiful and amusing. • The interior spaces of the traditional Palestinian home was simple and spaces were multipurpose. • There are special criteria for the design of different interior spaces. The criteria are related to the following: • Location / orientation. • Function / s. • Area and dimensions. • Furniture included. • Circulation. • Materials and colors used for different space elements. • Style of design. 34 Dr Nihad Almughany- Introduction to Interior Design- 2008
