Chapter No. 1Identification Of Computers 1.a Definition Of A Computer A computer is an electronic machine that can perform tasks like storing large amount of information, calculating complex mathematical or logical sums and processing information quickly and easily. To perform any task, a computers need to be given instructions . It then processes the given instructions and generates the result. It can run and process multiple tasks at the same time.

  4. 1.b Parts Of A Computer The most important parts of a computer are the Monitor , Keyboard, CentralProcessing Unit(CPU) and Mouse. These parts are connected to the computer with the help of cables as shown in the picture. There are some more parts ofr devices that can be connected to a computer. They are Printer, Scanner, Speakers and Headphones

  5. 1.c Places Where Computers Are UsedIn our daily life, we see the use of computers at various places. Some of the places where we use computers regularly are mentiones here.1) Computers are used at offices to store information about employees, communicate using audio or video conferencing, etc.2) They are used at schools or educational institutions to store students’ records, teacher’s details, school information and share multimedia information.3) They are used at homes to send emails, play movies and games, etc.4) In weather forecast labs, computers are used to predict the weather conditions.5) In railway stations, bus depots and airports, computers are used to book tickets.6) They are used at banks to keep records of money related transactions.7) Computers are also used at hospitals to store information of patients and their medical records. They are useful in high-end medical equipment's like x-ray, ECG and ultrasound.

  6. 1.d Advantages and uses of a computerSince a computer is an electronic device, it has many advantages over other machines. Some of the advantages are mentioned here.1] Computers can perform complex calculations quickly.2] It can store a large amount of information that can be retrived as and when required.3] Computers can store information for a longer time as compared to paper sheets.4] It can perform a single task many times with the same speed. For Example, Printing a page, creating a new document, opening a file or folder, etc.

A computer is used for the following purposes1] creating question papers and official documents.2] Drawing pictures for greeting cards, advertisements, posters, etc.3] Playing movies and songs for entertainment.4] searching for information on any topic like food chain, arithmetic equations, wild animals, etc.5] Communicating with people using the audio and videoconferencing facilities.
