  3. Which atoms are found in all living things? CHNOPS C = carbon H = hydrogen N = nitrogen O = oxygen P = phosphorus S = sulfur

  4. Carbon (C) • The atom that is the basis of all life. • In organic chemistry, carbon atoms bond to each other to form chains, branches, and rings. • Common substances made of C: • - Diamonds • - Coal • - Graphite (pencil lead)

  5. Molecules • many atoms -> molecules • many molecules -> macromolecules • macro = large • molecule = atoms that hook up

  6. Macromolecules (Organic Compounds) • Macromolecules are made of small units called monomers. mono = one • A monomer is like one link in a chain. • Many monomers put together make a polymer. poly = many • A polymer is like a long chain with many links.

  7. 4 types of polymers or macromolecules or organic compounds: • Carbohydrates (sugar) • Lipids (fat) • Protein • Nucleic Acids

  8. Glucose C6H12O6 Carbohydrates • Monomer: • monosaccharide (one sugar) • Examples: • glucose and fructose • Polymer: • polysaccharide (many sugars) • Examples: • glycogen (stored energy), starch (potatoes), table sugar (sucrose), cellulose ( used in the cell wall of plants)

  9. Phospholipid Lipids • Monomers: • fatty acid chains linked by a glycerol • Polymer: • Lipids • Examples: • Used in cell membranes, fat for insulation, waxes, oil, steroids (send messages), butter, and it stores energy

  10. Proteins • Monomers: • amino acid • Polymer: • proteins • (amino acids joined by peptide bonds) • Examples: • enzymes (chemical processes), cell structures, muscle contractions, meat, beans, nuts

  11. Nucleic Acids • Examples: • DNA and RNA • (store cell information, assist in making proteins) • Monomer: • nucleotide • (phosphate, sugar, nitrogen base) • Polymer: • nucleic acids

  13. Now you will create a book on these macromolecules… • Title Page with your name • 4 pages should have 1. Title 2. 3 sentences in your own words describing the macromolecule. 3. Pictures of one unit. 4. Pictures of items that contain these macromolecules.

  14. In class finish first 2 pages Tonight - finish next 2 pages. Tomorrow - finish last 2 pages. Due at the next grading period.
