Strike at him as hard as you can, and keep moving on.” • Grant’s troops captured two Confederate river forts in Tennessee • EFFECTS • Opened up a river highway for northern supply lines into the heart of the South (to the Alabama border)

Lee took over control of the Confederate troops in Northern Virginia • Lee sent scouts to spy on the Union troops • The two sides clashed in battles for a week • EFFECTS • High casualties • Union forces retreated • Ended the Union threat on the Confederate capital in Virginia
