What? • The cold war- a feud and a competition between the nations of the west, and the communist bloc • The democratic side, led by the United States, and the Communist bloc, led by Russia. • The two sides Competed over who could have the most nuclear weapons and the most influence in the developing world. They raced to get things done first, and to give money and support to new countries.

  3. When? • The cold war began in 1945. It was more of a competition than a war with battles. They raced to create the atomic bombs, and hadnuclear weapons pointed at each other with a moments notice to send them off. • United States leader at the start of the cold war was Harry Truman • Soviet Union leader at the start of the cold war was Joseph Stalin

How? • The cold war shaped the world in military and political affairs. • Countries such as Kazakstan, Ubekistan, Afghanistan, and other countries in that area,gained independence after the war. • The Berlin wall that separated West and East Germany was finally knocked down. • It was the basic foundation for many of the conflicts today such as the war on terror which is being fought in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq, some of which are countries previously under Soviet Union rule. www.transitionsabroad.com/.../maps/asia_map.jpg http://www.imf.org/external/about/histcomm.htm
