5. Library as Tree • A tree is a living organism in itself as well as a major player in an ecosystem. • Think about a favorite tree or favorite activity/memory involving trees. • Think about tree structure and function. • Roots • Trunk and branches • Leaves Tom Schmiedel

6. Library as Tree • Libraries, like trees and forests, have structure and function. • Libraries provide environment for living, for growth, interaction and realizing potential academically, mentally, emotionally. Tom Schmiedel

7. Library as Tree • Trees support life. • Birds, mammal, reptiles, insects, microscopic organisms and other plants. • Trees are individual entities, but survive in a community environment. Tom Schmiedel

8. Library as Tree • Each person or department in a library is a separate entity, but survives in a community. • Important to envision self and library as a member of overall community, and communicate this to library users. Tom Schmiedel

9. Library as Tree • Think of library as a strong tree, rooted deeply, serving as a resource for a multitude of users in a manner to help them grow. • By contributing to the growth of the community, the library will grow as well. Tom Schmiedel

10. Gasoline • Every time I fill my tank with gas I watch the pump rise up to about $40.00. • Ethanol is a component added to gasoline. There are signs on many pumps saying things like “10% ethanol added”. What is ethanol? Tom Schmiedel

11. Ethanol • Ethanol is a chemical, so chemistry must surely play a role. • It can be generated by means of several processes, many of which involve plants, so biology plays a role. • It can be generated from waste products, so environmental science plays a role as well. • It produces energy, so physics plays a role too. Ethanol • Who can tell me how these “science areas” are involved, anything at all about their relationship to ethanol? • And how does this science affect your life and our society? • Basically, is ethanol in gasoline a good thing? Do some searching and tell me something about the what, where, how and why of ethanol. Tom Schmiedel

13. Ethanol Search • Quick search. Normally a search would require construction of succinct question and full search strategy. • Below are six selected resources. I used very simple search terms, ethanol as a single term and +ethanol +energy in a two word search. Use the specific articles or search for any other information related to ethanol. Tom Schmiedel
