Literacy • Reading Workshop – Daily reading activities • Spelling – a weekly rule and test • Poetry – The power of imagery • Journalistic writing/recounts – news reports and recounts about the Crusades • Narrative – writing a long quest story • Big Writing – regular independent writing challenge • Understanding Physical Development, Health and Well-being • We will be swimming this term (every Thursday) and learning tag rugby • Please remember that PE kits must be in school every day, including both indoor and outdoor shoes • We will develop our feelings and attitudes regarding ‘’New Beginnings” through listening, talking and sharing viewpoints RE We will learn about Buddhism and Islam MFL We will develop our working knowledge of conversational French Creative Curriculum Year 6 Autumn 1, 2014 $ • Scientific and Technological Understanding • We will explore some of the scientific advances from the medieval Islamic world • We will carry out experiments based on alchemy and astrology • We will build our own astrolabe for telling the time using the sun and stars • We will investigate reversible and irreversible changes The Crusades • ICT • We will use the internet to research secondary source information about our topic • We will present our work using a range of ICT techniques, including Powerpoint, Excel and Word. • Historical, Geographical and Social Understanding • As historians, we will use primary and secondary sources to explore life in medieval Britain and early Islamic civilisation • We will travel to the Holy Land in the footsteps of the Crusaders and understand their reasons for fighting • We will draw detailed maps of the areas we study and identify changes over time • Understanding the Arts • We will explore the artwork of medieval Britain and early Islamic civilisation • We will make our own medieval tapestry using sewing techniques • We will make medieval-style stain glass windows • We will create art inspired by Islamic geometric patterns • Maths • Big Maths – daily focus on key number skills • Times Tables – dedicated sessions to help learn tables up to 12x12 • Ordering numbers with decimals • Perimeter and Area • Shapes and Angles • Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction • Fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion • Introduction to algebra (link to topic)
