  1. What are fossils? A fossil is a plant or animal from long ago that has turned to stone. How are fossils formed?

  2. First, the dinosaur must die and get buried in dirt.

  3. Then, the soft parts of the dinosaur rot away and continues to be buried underground.

  4. Next, water carrying minerals seep into the bones called pores and the bones start to harden.

  5. After some time, more layers of dirt cover the bones and the weight of the dirt pushes down on the bones.

  6. Finally, after millions of years have gone by the bones turn into a fossil.
