  1. Jesus: Our Servant SaviourPhilippians 2:5-11 • The Christian life is all about serving. • Luke 22:25–27 (NLT)  Jesus told them, “In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’  But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.  Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.

  2. The word "Servant" in our English New Testament usually represents the Greek “doulos” (which means slave). Sometimes it means “diakonos” (deacon or minister); this is strictly accurate, for doulos and diakonos are synonyms. Both words denote a man who is not at his own disposal, but is his master's purchased property. Bought to serve his master's needs, to be at his beck and call every moment, the slave's sole business is to do as he is told. Christian service therefore means, first and foremost, living out a slave relationship to one's Savior (1 Corinthians. 6:19-20).James Packer, Your Father Loves You

  3. Maybe this incident provides us with an important insight why God used D. L. Moody to reach thousands of people for Christ. He was a man with a servant’s heart and that was the basis of his true greatness. Gary Inrig, A Call to Excellence • Philippians 2:3b,4 (NIV) - …in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  4. 1. Self-Denial • Matthew 16:24 (NIV) Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. • Philippians 2:6,7a (NIV) – [Christ], being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing… • Jesus and God are equal  two distinct persons, but the same being – GOD • “something to be grasped”  “to have an advantage”

  5. “something to be exploited” – NRSV • Jesus teaches us not to exploit others but to “empty” ourselves • Philippians 2:7 (NLT) - [Jesus] gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave. • What does it take to be able to “empty” yourself like that?

  6. 2. Humility • Christ is our model. • Philippians 2:7,8a (NIV) - but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. • Jesus took on a human nature and became a servant. • Matthew 20:28 (NIV) - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

  7. Philippians 2:8b (NIV) - And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself. • Romans 12:3–5 (NIV) - Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment • D.L. Moody had to put his pride aside in order to gather up those shoes and polish them. • We live in a “me first” world and have been trained that we have every right to live that way.

  8. Jesus teaches us a different way. • Example: Jesus washes the disciples’ feet • John 13:4–5 (NIV) - …got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. • Jesus taught his disciples to become servants. • He needed to demonstrate that humility himself so they would have an example to follow.

  9. 3. Obedience • Philippians 2:8 (NIV) - And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! • Christ willingly gave up his life so that we could have new life in him. • Obedience is the action that completes the process of becoming a servant.

  10. From the time we are born, we demand that others meet our needs. • “survival of the fittest” ? • No  human depravity. • Jesus gave up the glory of heaven to model a different approach to life. • Philippians 2:6-8 (NIV) – [Jesus] being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!

  11. What should we willing to do for him? • Philippians 2:1–4 (NIV) - If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  12. Philippians 2:5(NIV) Your attitude [and my attitude] should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. • Behave like Jesus did. • God became man to be our Saviour • In the process, he showed us how to be a servant.
