  1. Peripheral Nervous System All of the nerves of the body and ganglia Autonomic nervous system is a specialized part of the PNS

  2. Divisions of the Nervous System

  3. Cranial Nerves Cranial Nerves • 12 pairs • Begin in the brain • Designated by number and name

  4. Spinal Nerves Spinal Nerves • Originate at spinal cord and go through openings in vertebrae • 31 pairs of spinal nerves • All are mixed nerves • Named in relation to their location on the spinal cord.

  5. Autonomic Nervous System • Regulates activities of visceral organs • Not subject to conscious control

  6. SNS and PNS • Sympathetic Nervous system the “fight or flight” system when the body perceives danger, SNS sends a message to adrenal medulla to secrete adrenaline heartbeat increases. • Parasympathetic nervous system counters effect of SNS decreases heart rate

  7. Definitions • Reflex-unconscious and involuntary In a simple reflex, only a sensory nerve and motor nerve involved – example, “Knee-jerk” reflex. Using a reflex hammer tap the patellar tendon (on knee) what happens?

  8. Somatic Nervous System • Part of the peripheral nervous system • Carries motor and sensory information both to and from the central nervous system • Connects skin to sensory organs and all skeletal muscles • Hearing • Touch • sight

  9. Nervous Tissue • Bundle of nerve fibers • Sensory nerves (afferent) carries impulses from skin • To sense organs, to spinal cord and brain.

  10. Motor Nerves(efferent) • Carry messages from the brain and spinal nerves to muscles and glands. • Associative neurons • (interneurons) carry impulses from sensory neurons to motor neurons.

  11. Questions for PPT and BM three • On the bubble map draw each of the pictures and discuss what each of the picture means related to the central nervous system. • Each picture should be in color • Remember to color the bubble map and write in color. • Make sure the questions cover the entire page.
