  1. European Project IST – 2000 – 28058 European Project IST – 2000 – 28058

  2. The AIDER project Innovative Vehicle-Infrastructure Telematics for Rescue Operations - Antonio Lanci - Project Manager FIAT Research Center

  3. Project Objectives The AIDER project aims at the development of an efficient system, ableto optimize the efficiency of Rescue Operations in situations of Accidents on the Road. The AIDER Concept is based on the idea of a direct co-operation between an On-board System for Automatic Incident Detection, to be installed in vehicles, and Control Centers, dispatching the emergency calls to the “Rescue Services”. During- and after-accident full information on personal injuries, vehicle status, involved parties and accident area location are automatically provided to the Control Center. This should lead to an effective reduction of the time of intervention and optimisation of the rescue procedures, so it can be possible to consequently reduce mortality in road accidents.

  4. Scientific Objectives • The AIDER project aims to study, design and develop three main sub-systems: • an On-board system: with a specific sensorial platform for passengers physical status monitoring, a computing unit for accident severity classification and recording memory for accident reconstruction • a Communication system: with a transmitting system for dispatching the Automatic SOS call • a Control Center system: for receiving • and manage the information • arriving from the Accident area

  5. Added Values of the Project • The AIDER system is able to: • Make an Automatic SOS Call to a Control Center to optimize the operation management of the Rescue Forces • Provide a Voice and Video Link between the Vehicle and the Control Center • Provide Biomedical Data about the physical status of the passengers involved in the accident • Make Off-Line Accident Reconstruction, useful for attribution of responsibilities (for Insurance companies and Police) • Automatic detection of the Position of the Accident

  6. Technologies • AIDER will mainly investigate state-of-the-art technologies involving: • On-Board Vehicle sensorial systems and Telematic Technologies -> Accelerometers, Gyros, GPS, VideoCameras, Crash Sensors… • Biophysical sensors -> Accelerometers and Oxymeters, for Hearth Rate, Respiration Rate, Blood Oxigen, Blood Pressure. • Communication technologies -> GPRS/UMTS, SARSAT • Control Center technologies

  7. Operation Simulation of accident scenarios. When the accident is simulated, information are sent to the Control Center, regarding physical parameters of the occupants, vehicle status, Two Operation modes: - Automatic Call - Manual Call Test of Resistance of stand-alone Black Box: resistance to crashes with manteinance of transmitting functionalities Test of correct receiving of data in the Control Center, both Medical Control Center and Road Management Center Rescue center

  8. Contribution to European Policy In Europe, road accidents cause about 42000 deaths and 1.5 millions injured people, every year. AIDER, trying to optimise rescue procedures and operations with also the reduction of the time of response, will provide valuable contribution to the EU policy, in particular way addressing the reduction ofcosts in rescue operation, and also contributing to the very important social and ethical aim of reduction of deaths in road accidents.

  9. Methodologies Control Centerfor Road Management, Control Centerfor Rescue Management, Insurance companies, Police, and others will be contacted to better identify which are the valuable information of the accident, regarding the vehicle, the occupants and the surrounding area status. Sensors for Biophysical information and valuable vehicle information will be defined. Requirements or protecting this data (Black Box protection) will be also defined. At Control Center level, the Accident severity will be in this way reconstructed, using a wide Accidentologic Database, in order to foresee the crash severity and therefore optimize rescue management operations.

  10. Future Benefits AIDER short term benefits: improvement of actualrescue operationsand managementand provision of valuable information regarding accident severity. AIDER long term benefits: Possible introduction to the market of AIDER systems. The AIDER Black Box may be, in the future, widely used for helping in accident situations and for accident reconstruction (useful for Police and Insurance companies).
