  2. Lack of Insurance leads to Medical Debt • 62.1% of bankruptcies were due to the burden of medical bills. • Many Muslims don’t have access to employer provided health insurance because: • 20% are self-employed, 29% are under-employed and 17% are unemployed.

  3. The Individual Mandate • In order to address the issue of Uninsurance and Medical Debt, in March 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into Law • The Individual Mandate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will require all residents of the United States to have health insurance, with some exemptions for financial hardship. 

  4. ACA: Regulating Health Insurance Plans • 60% of people that have medical debt had health insurance at the time that the debt occurred. In order to address this problem: • Private health plans must treat you fairly; they can’t deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition. • Private health plans must now cover a comprehensive set of benefits.

Essential Health Benefits All Insurance Plans must now cover: • Ambulatory Patient Services • Prescription Drugs • Emergency Services • Rehabilitative & Habilitative Services & Devices • Hospitalization • Laboratory Services • Maternity & Newborn Care • Preventive & Wellness Services & Chronic Disease Management • Mental Health & Substance Abuse Disorder Services including Behavioral Health Treatment • Pediatric Services including Oral & Vision Care

Penalties • If you don’t have Health Insurance in 2014, you will have to pay a penalty of $95 per adult, $47.50 per child, or 1% of your income (whichever is higher). • The fee increases every year, (up to $695 for an Some people may qualify for an exemption from this fee. • You’re considered covered if you have Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, any job-based plan, any plan you bought yourself, COBRA, retiree coverage, TRICARE, VA health coverage, or some other kinds of health coverage

  8. The MarketPlace • Some states operate their own Marketplace. • In some states, the Marketplace is run by the Federal government. • All marketplaces can be accessed through healthcare.gov

  9. Market Place Enrollment Periods • The First Open Enrollment period ends March 31, 2014. • The Second Open Enrollment is from October 15 – December 7.

  10. How to Find Help on the Marketplace • Visit HealthCare.gov and click on the Help link in the upper right of the screen • Call the Marketplace Call Center toll-free at 1-800-318-2596 • TTY users should call 1-855-889-4325 • Assistance is available in different languages
