  1. Welcome Language Arts

  2. Who Am I? • Ms. Jarrell or Ms. Neely • Education • Experience • Excited

  3. Expectations Students are expected to: • Arrive on time and be prepared to work. • Have a planner and other required materials. • Be respectful of peers and adults. • Participate in classroom discussions. • Complete any assignments in a timely manner.

  4. Course Description • Language arts this year will be taught using the Inside curriculum. This is a literacy curriculum that focuses on comprehension skills and strategies, vocabulary building, and writing. The reading passages are high interest. In addition, the Rewards program will be used for specific word attack skills. Finally, organization in writing will be taught using Step Up to Writing materials. Oral reading fluency will be monitored and reported. Each student will also focus on their specific IEP goals and curriculum will be modified accordingly.

  5. Curriculum • What we are using: • Inside • Step Up to Writing • REWARDS- comprehensive word attack curriculum for multi-syllabic words • Supplemental Materials: • Six Minute Solutions • Inside Writing • Writing to Persuade • Read Naturally

  6. Additional Components • Weekly trips to the library/computer lab for AR testing opportunities, and Read Naturally sessions which focus on reading fluency and comprehension

  7. Homework • My goal with homework is to never give more than is manageable. • I understand the demands in other classes. • I will send homework and post on the web. • Homework for the week will include spelling and vocabulary that we are working on. • Additional homework will include reading passages to be timed each night.

  8. Grading • Students will be given a placement test at the beginning of the school year. This will determine specific areas to focus on and placement within the program. Goals for the class are to increase comprehension skills, develop strategies for challenging words, and increase fluency. The final goal is to teach students to become organized and focused writers. Total grades will be based on the following: coming to class prepared, classroom assignments, tests and quizzes, and on task behavior. The class will be graded on a percentage point system.

  9. Snacks • I have noticed a trend… • It’s a long morning for 6th graders! • If you would like to send snacks with your child please do so or send a contribution to a classroom snack bank. • Please send snacks that require no clean up or utensils. Great ideas include goldfish, pretzels, crackers, chips, fruit snacks etc. Please no peanut butter or nuts of any kind due to allergies (even if a student does not ingest it, they can react to allergens in the air). • I would be happy to accept donations and keep them on hand in class for anyone who needs it. • Thank You!
