1. WELCOME to BUSINESS SPANISH • Warm up activity: • Write down any Spanish names which you may already know. • Why do you know these words ?. • Look at the first few pages of your book and write down any Spanish words forwhich you can work out the meaning in English.

2. The following presentation could be used as an “on-line lesson” if accompanied of audio visual material. Any speaking activity could be, if necessary, recorded by the student and sent to the teacher. The presentation is made up of ……….self explanatory slides. The presentation includes exercises with great emphasise in oral communication.

3. Let’s start with the sounds: Learn to pronounce the 5 vowels and you’ll be able to read in Spanish. But, also pay attention to some particular sounds:

9. In Spanish we “read what we write”, we apply the letters’ sounds. However we still have some peculiarities. And we need to look at the combination of some “CV” (consonant / vowel).

19. Let’s start with some simple greetings: How do we break up the day in Spain ?. In Spain we only break up the day into three parts: Morning, Afternoon, Night. Up to 8.00pm From 8 or 9.00pm till next morning Up to 1.00pm

23. What is, therefore, the first cultural difference between Spain and England, many of which you will find out through this course ?. We only talk about Morning, Afternoon and Night.

24. Introducing oneself and someone else What’s different between Spanish and English? Different expressions and two ways of saying “YOU” depending on whether we have a formal “USTED” or informal“TU”conversation.

25. Situation: You arrive at the company, based in the foreign country, and someone comes to welcome you. The following slides will present you with the correct expressions to use in a formalcontext (business) . “Hello, Welcome, Pleased to meet you, it’s a pleasure”.

28. Have you noticed the different ending (o/a) ?: “Nouns in Spanish have a gender -masculine \feminine-. The rule (90%) could be that a noun ending in “A” is feminine, otherwise is masculine. Therefore, if we greet to a woman, we’ll say “Encantada, o Bienvenida”.

29. Look at these flashcards and work in pairs. One partner points to a flashcard and the other pronounce correctly. Then, the other partner pronounce a greeting and his/her colleague has to point to the correct flashcard. Award points for correct answers.

30. Now, prepare a short conversation using the following flashcards. You will refer to the time of the day and welcome and greet a visitor to your company.

31. Now,stand up and practise that short conversation with a male and female colleague. Pay attention to the different ending depending on the gender of your colleague.

32. Let’s see when a third party introduces us to another person. “Le presento” When one person is introduced to me. “Les presento” When one person is introduced to a group.

34. Have you noticed the difference betwee a Formal & Informal introduction ?. “Le presento” / “Te presento” “Les presento” / “Os presento” In the next two slides you look at different expressions, some + /- formal.

37. Activity: Think of a situation, eg a salesman arriving to a branch of the firm in another city, and you are introduced to the manager. In groups of three, prepare an script using the expressions from the previous two slides. Remember you are in a business situation. Eg: “Le presento al Señor Martinez. Me alegro de conocerle. Igualmente.”

38. A social aspect: Hand shaking :in a business situation no kisses but just a hand shake. When people knows to each other, and between man and womad, two kisses.

42. “Hasta el próximo……” What day is today? Today is ......... Look at the question and answer in English. Look for the pattern that is followed. Now, apply the same logical to the question and answer in Spanish.

44. Activity: Write one day of the week on a small piece of paper, don’t let the others see what you’ve got. One starts with the question “¿Qué día es hoy?”“¿Hoy es ……?”. Your colleague needs to guess what card you have got. Right guess, you get the card, wrong guess the other student’s turn.

45. 2nd Activity: Go back to your first scrip with greetings and introduce a “bye” expression. Again, perform with a male and female colleague. 3rd Activity: Think of an activity or image you can associate to each day of the week. In pairs, play a guessing game.

46. Use the expressions learnt to fill in the speech bubbles.

47. Cultural Awareness: Interrogation and exclamation symbols: An upside down symbol of interrogation is used at the beginning of the question (¿…..?). The same for an exclamation symbol (¡ …!).

48. Tu Yo ¿Usted ? Which expression will be used in a business situation ?, What does it mean ?

49. The next four slides introduce the expressions: Mr. ……(surname) Mrs. …… (surname) I’m Mr. ……… I’m Mrs. …….. Remember about the gender ?. Now, again, we need to look at the different ending depending on whether we mean Mr or Mrs. Also, look at the article in front, that also changes depending again on the gender.
