  • The Cold War was a period of global tension and subdued hostility between the communist Soviet Union and the democratic United States from the 1940s to the 1990s.

  • The Cold War was a psychological war!

  • At the close of World War II, The Soviets occupied the Eastern portion of Germany, while France, Great Britain and the US occupied the western half. As tensions began to harden between the Soviets and their former allies in the West, the division became more and more complete, and the creation of the Berlin wall and two separate German governments was the eventual result.

  • The United States and Soviet Union began to distrust each other. Both had nuclear weapons and feared they could be used on each other.

  • Each nation wanted to be the strongest in stature!

  • On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War.

  • The United States saw this as a direct threat to democracy, and got involved in the war.

  • was the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth's orbit. It was launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. It put the U.S. in a space race with the Soviet Union.

  • On August 13, 1961, the East German government erected the Berlin Wall in order to keep its citizens from fleeing to the West. The east was communist, the west was democratic.
