They are our thing.…not dependent on us. Rather we are dependent on them.…not an interruption of our work, but the purpose of it.We are not doing them a favor by serving them. They are doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so.

  6. 3. Where do I drop or add a class? • Schedule changes may be processed in the same place you initially registered. • The forms and required approvals change depending on the time period. See “Change of Schedule” in the catalog, Semester Class Schedule, or on the Web. • Education Advisement can also drop/add classes for education majors during the first week of classes

If I quit attending class, will my instructor just automatically drop me? • No. You must submit request yourself or you may owe full fees and receive an “F” grade. • If you are dropping all of your classes you are withdrawing from the University for that semester and must submit written request (mail/fax/in person) to the Registration Center, Carrington Hall 320. • If you are dropping a particular class (but not all) – you must follow the Change of Schedule procedure to drop the course(s).

I dropped classes/withdrew so why do you think I still owe you money? • Fee adjustments (refunds/credits) are based on the date a student makes a request in writing in relation to the length of the course. See Refund Schedule. Courses dropped after the 100% refund deadline will result in all or a portion of fees paid to be retained, or fees due to still be valid and collectable. Students may also be required to return all or a portion of financial aid payments made on their behalf. • Financial Services: Carrington Hall 113

  9. 6. What should I do if an instructor takes roll and doesn’t read my name? • Ask the instructor if he/she overlooked your name • Check your class schedule or the web and verify the section and room number • Go to the Registration Center, Carrington Hall 320, and verify enrollment

  10. 7. I don’t like my instructor. What should I do? • You may change sections or drop/add courses during the first week of the semester with no penalty of fees or grades. • After the first week such changes may require department approval and additional fees may be assessed. • See “Change of Schedule” in the catalog, Semester Class Schedule, or on the Web for additional information.

  15. 12. When are my fees due? • Depends on when you initially registered and types of fee. • See “Costs and Fees” (http://www.smsu.edu/costs)

  16. 13. When and where do I pick up my financial aid? • Students with direct deposit could receive the proceeds two or three days before the start of the semester. Those not authorizing direct deposit will be mailed a check during the third week of the semester. • Contact Financial Aid Office: Carrington Hall 101, for additional information

  17. 14. I need to get my financial aid and it isn’t ready yet. What do I do? • Check with Financial Aid Office, Carrington Hall 101 • Usually occurs when application is filed after April 1, forms are not turned in, or enrollment status precludes disbursement.

  18. 15. What will happen to my financial aid if I drop a class? • Dropping courses and withdrawals may affect your current and your future financial aid. Requirements vary, so you should check with the Financial Aid Office to determine the impact on financial aid.

  20. 17. When can I start working and when do I get paid? • Students not previously enrolled at SMSU can begin working on the first day of class. Continuing students can work between semesters if they are pre-enrolled for the upcoming semester. • Paychecks are direct deposited monthly according to the schedule published by the Payroll Office available at http://www.smsu.edu/studentemp/paysched.htm • Earnings statements are located under “My Information” on the SMSU web page.

Who is my advisor? • SMSU Website: “My Information” section – Advisement Folder – Students can look up their assigned advisors. • Academic Advisement Center: University Hall 109 – For students who need to have an advisor assigned. • If you have already declared a major, then through the department of your major.

  24. 21. Where do I get a free tutor? • Free tutoring is available on a first-come, first-serve basis in addition to referring students to other campus offices to help with course work. • Student Retention Services: Carrington Hall 302 or 315

  25. 22. How can I get help with math? • There is a math lab in Cheek 5 for students in MTH 101, 102, 103, and 135. It is staffed by faculty of the Math Department. Hours are approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but will be posted during the second week of classes. • A second math lab for students in classes above MTH 135 is in Cheek 38-M. It is staffed by a math tutor.

  26. 23. How do I get help with English? • A writing center is available to students for help with creating and editing papers. It is located in Pummill 401. It is staffed by English instructors and graduate students. Its hours are Monday-Tuesday 9am-7pm, Wednesday-Thursday 9am-9pm, and Friday 9am–1pm.

  27. 24. Why do I have to take public speaking? • Communication skills and relevant experience are the two characteristics employers value the most.

I’ve purchased a commuter tag and there are no empty parking spaces. • Parking is a particular problem during the first two weeks of classes, as students tend to be on campus for reasons other than classes. Usually, parking becomes a lesser issue once the schedules are more routine. • In the meantime, encourage students to: • Arrive early • Use the Park-N-Ride facility

Is it true that parking tickets are not written during the first week of class? • Yes and no. • During the first week of classes, students who are legally parked in commuter (yellow) and residence hall (red and green) lots but do not have a parking permit will not be ticketed. • After the first week of classes, students must have a parking permit.

Where do I get an email address? • New freshmen were given email accounts during SOAR. • SMSU Website: “My Information” section – MY Computer Resources – can be used to obtain email (if have PIN) if have not had email account issued previously • Cheek Computer Lab: Cheek Hall 150 • Glass Computer Lab: Glass Hall 234 • Strong Computer Lab: Strong Hall 107 • Students must present their ZIP Cards to obtain an email account.Note: If you forget your email password but know your PIN, you can access “My Information – My Computer Resources” and change your password.Note: Students must present their ZIP Cards to obtain an email account

Where do I get dial-up access? • To configure your computer to dial up SMSU, bring your ZIP Card to Cheek Hall 150, Glass Hall 228, 229, 234, 235 or Strong Hall 107, and check out a Dialup Access CD from a lab assistant, and then follow the instructions provided on the CD.   35. 32. What information can I get from the SMSU web page? • The SMSU website contains information about the campus, academics, fees, deadlines, events, and other various information. Students may use their Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access their own personal information such as class schedule, transcript, GPA, address, degree audits, payroll stubs and other information through the “My Information” section. • Guide to email, computing, and technology: http://ebear.smsu.edu

Where do I buy a meal plan? • Students living in the residence halls and apartments may purchase or change a meal plan by contacting either Residence Life and Services (located in Hammons House #104) or Dining Services Office (located on the 2nd floor of PLSU). • Individual meal prices for the dining centers are: Breakfast $3.50, Lunch $4.75 and Dinner $5.00.

What is the University Housing Policy at SMSU? • As is common with most institutions, SMSU requires all single freshman students (less than 30 credit hours) under 21 years of age to reside in University Housing… all others are welcome as space permits. • Philosophy behind this policy: Students resident on campus, on average, perform better academically , and complete their education in less time than their peers living off campus.

What should I do if I’m not getting along with my roommate? • If students are having problems with an aspect of residence hall living, they are encouraged to contact their resident assistant or hall director for help. • Residence Life and Services:Hammons House #104 (to the east of the main entrance)
