  7. Acquisition/Delivery Plan • Undulators • Prototyped and Thoroughly Tested • Long-Lead Procurements • Ti Strongback • Magnet Blocks • Magnets Poles • 1st Article in industry before production run (FY05) • Assemble in industry • Deliver to SLAC MMF • Measure/tune at SLAC • Handover of responsibility to SLAC following successful tuning • Install

  8. Acquisition/Delivery Plan • Diagnostics • Standardize as much as possible • Prototype/review and then go to industry • Note: No inter undulator x-ray diagnostics • See B. Yang’s Talk • Vacuum • Prototype/review and then go to industry • See Walters’ Talk

  9. Acquisition/Delivery Plan • Controls • Undulator is all EPICS • Work with SLAC to integrate into SLAC system • See Dalesio’s Talk • MMF • ANL Lead/Mentor/Consult • SLAC to build and operate • See Ruland’s Talk

  10. Major New Features Since Last DOE Review • Canted Poles (4.5 mrad) • Accurate K tuning • Setting gaps to 1 micron precision is very difficult and time consuming otherwise • Allows tapering • Both for the spontaneous radiation energy losses and for future “power tapering” • Provides longitudinal phase tuning • Remote rollaway undulators (10 cm) • Allows the checking of the undulators individually as well as allowing “variable” undulator length • Requires • Slight increased in gap (6.5 mm -> 6.8 mm) • And slightly reduced K (But no major loss in peak FEL power delivered)

  11. Major New Features Since Last DOE Review • “Wingless” Poles • Major Simplification in a Large Quantity (19,200), LLP item • Value engineering • See Moog’s and Nuhn’s talks regarding all the above

  12. Undulator System Summary Schedule • FY04 • Physics Requirements Document • Agreed Upon and Signed • FY05 • LLP: Strongback, Magnets, Magnet Blocks • Vacuum/Diagnostics System Prototypes • EPICS -> SLAC Controls Interface Issues • Begin MMF

  13. Undulator System Summary Schedule • FY06 • Undulator Assembly Production and Deliveries • Vacuum and Diagnostics Productions and Deliveries • Detailed Controls Interface Development • Complete MMF • 1st Magnet Measurements

  14. Undulator System Summary Schedule • FY07 • Complete Undulator Assembly Production and Deliveries • Complete Vacuum and Diagnostics Productions and Deliveries • Complete Controls • Complete Magnet Measurements • Installation and Checkout • Complete by October

  15. Undulator System Summary Schedule • FY08 • System Commissioning • First Beam through undulator December 2007 NOV 07 SEPT 08

  16. Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (BCWS) • $6M of the jump between FY04 and FY05 is LLP • These are the Strongback, Magnet Blocks and Magnet Poles • Plus industry-built 1st article • FY 07 OPC Jump is primarily due to spares • 6 Undulators and Supports • Quadrupoles • Vacuum components • Diagnostics • MMF Spares Measurements • Other Labor

  17. Schedule Risk • Budget Authority in FY05 and FY06 • FY05 • Primarily affects the Ti Strongback • Continuing resolution • Much more than a couple of months and we will have difficulties • FY06 • Waiting to let order for assembly • Biggest risk to the undulator schedule • Every day is a day cutting into our float relative to the project schedule

  18. Undulator Thoroughly Reviewed • Recent Project-Wide Reviews • DOE Reviews • April 23 – 25, 2002 (CD-1) • May 21 – 23, 2003 (CD-2a) • EIR • June 7 – 11, 2004 • Facility Advisory Committee Review • April 29 – 30, 2004

  19. Undulator Thoroughly Reviewed • Undulator System Specific Reviews • Undulator Review • Nov. 14th, 2003 • Specific to the Undulator Magnet • Canted poles were conceived • Wingless poles were suggested • Undulator System Review • Mar. 3 – 4, 2004 • Encompassed the full undulator system

  20. Undulator Thoroughly Reviewed • Undulator System Specific Reviews (Cont.) • PreEIR Review • April 14th, 2004 • ANL Internal review of readiness for the EIR • Undulator Mechanical Review (Internal) • June 2004 • Review recent change to wingless poles

  21. Undulator Thoroughly Reviewed • Undulator System Specific Reviews (Cont.) • Final Undulator Review • Sept. 16 – 17, 2004 (Future) • Last look at the undulator engineering • Look at the preparedness for long-lead procurements

  22. And Discussed • Misc. Workshops etc. • Undulator Parameter Workshop • ANL Oct. 24th, 2003 • Undulator Diagnostics and Commissioning Workshop • UCLA Jan. 19 – 20, 2004 • Undulator Physics and Engineering Discussion • ANL June 28 – 29, 2004

  23. Summary • Organization • Robust and working well • Resource Loaded Schedule • Completed, reviewed, and found sound • LLP • Engineering • Prototype undulator fully studied, reviewed and refined • Acquisition/Delivery Plans • Thoroughly discussed, planned and understood • We are Ready to go • All we require is the BA
